hen Liliya Bromberg is
happy, her charismatic
smile fills the room. And
Friday, May 4, that big smile was
broadcast on televisions all over Metro
Detroit on Channel 7 News as she got
the surprise of her life.
That day, Liliya, 21 and living with
cerebral palsy that confines her to a
wheelchair, saw her new dream home-
away-from-home for the first time.
Her new surprise space is a special-
ized, renovated studio apartment of
her own — gifted to her by Friendship
Circle and a number of generous
Michigan companies.
The Friendship Circle strives to cre-
ate friendships in the lives of children
with disabilities. The organization
pairs the children with teen volun-
teers, and together they participate
in a number of programs. Liliya has
been a part of the Friendship Circle
family since 1997 and has a long list
of beloved volunteers she has created
relationships with over the years.
As Liliya approached her new apart-
ment for the first time, the hallway
was lined with many of her old friends
from Friendship Circle, all wearing
T-shirts that read "Liliya Changed My
Life In 1998" or whichever year they
worked with her.
When Liliya entered her room for
the first time, her smile was beyond
belief. She was overwhelmed as she
took in her fully furnished, decked-
out, home-away-from home.
For the last 17 years, Liliya and
her family, who came from Russia-
when Liliya was 4, have lived in a
400-square-foot, one-bedroom apart-
ment in Oak Park. As a 21-year- old
woman, Liliya was craving space and
independence.
A few months ago, Liliya and her
family received a devastating blow.
She was diagnosed with hepatocellular
carcinoma. The Friendship Circle was
called to action.
"When we heard this news, all of
us at Friendship Circle, who have
become her family, pulled together to
do everything possible to help out:'
said Bassie Shemtov, the director of
Friendship Circle.
"What we needed to do is find this
special, magical place for Lilliya that
is private and is a place where she can
breathe and enjoy her friends and her
freedom away from mom and dad."
When the staff at Friendship Circle
put out the call for support with this
project months ago, it was answered
with overwhelming generosity from a
number of local companies.
The studio apartment was donated
by Matt Lester and Ashley Oleshanki
of Princeton Management. The
interior design and coordination
was donated and provided by Shari
Stein of Partners In Design Inc. The
structural concepts were provided
by Harold Remlinger of Remlinger
Architekts, and all of the construction
was provided by Sheldon Yellen and
Mike Barnett of Belfor USA.
With coordination from Friendship
Circle, LaFontaine Automotive Group
donated their services and labor to do a
complete overhaul of her parents' van so
she could still get to Friendship Circle.
But there was one more surprise:
Believe in Miracles funded a trip for
Liliya and her dad to go to the Big
Apple.
As Liliya took it all in, she was sur-
rounded by cheers and hugs from her
friends, whom she will now be able to
spend time with in her own space.
"A special thank you to all who
participated in making my home away
from home happen!" wrote Liliya in a
note. "This will continue for genera-
tions for the people who did this to be
blessed forever! You guys did such a
gift — you don't even understand how
much freedom, ability and indepen-
dence you gave me!"
