he Ann Arbor community
will gather to commemorate
Israel's 64th birthday and to
celebrate Israel's capital city, Jerusalem,
from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the
Jewish Community Center, 2939 Birch
Hollow Drive.
A Walk for Israel, coordinated by
Jewish Hikers of Michigan and Temple
Beth Emeth, will start at 12:30 p.m.;
registration begins at 12:15 p.m.
Celebrate Israel brings together rep-
resentatives from Greater Aim Arbor's
Jewish communal organizations to
conceive, program and implement a
joyous celebration of Israeli innova-
tion, creativity and culture for hun-
dreds of celebrants of all ages.
"This day is always a wonderful day
full of fun as well as a special day for
everyone to gather and celebrate what
we love about Israel," said Laurel Hern,
Celebrate Israel committee chair.
Enjoy Israeli dancing, Israeli
street food and top-notch entertain-
ment. Family activities include the
"Jerusalem Light Rail" express train,
quick-sketch artist Darrell Swift ($10/
sketch), street performers, return of
the Moshav Nahalal tent and more.
Desert Embroidery, a cottage craft
women's cooperative whose members
are Israeli citizens of Bedouin ethnic-
ity, returns to Celebrate Israel. The
booth will sell handiwork based on
traditional patterns; sales will benefit
the women who live in the Negev.
Beit Ha'Tfutsot: The Museum of the
Jewish People will give participants
the opportunity to share their family
stories. Send photos, recipes or stories

advance or bring to the event.
"In Israel, many people wear blue
and white on Independence Day:' said
Dina Pedersen, a Celebrate Israel com-
mittee member. "It really adds to the
atmosphere, and I hope people will
show their colors at Celebrate Israel:'
New Celebrate Israel T-shirts will be
available for purchase in advance and
at the event.
Volunteers are needed; they receive
free entry and a festival T-shirt.
Entry to Celebrate Israel is $5/indi-
vidual and $15/family. Pre-registration
is encouraged. Become a sponsor and
get free entry, a T-shirt, food voucher
