Joyous Celebration

Hillel Day School marks Israel's
birthday with a day of activities.

For affordable retirement living, no place compares to

ver the last several weeks,
Israel and the Jewish world
observed Yom HaShoah
(Holocaust Memorial Day), Yom
HaZikaron (Israel Memorial
Day) and Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel
Independence Day). At Hillel Day
School in Farmington Hills, each
holiday is marked with special
ceremonies and programs. Yom
HaAtzmaut calls for celebrations.
The day began with seventh-
grade students serving as Israeli flag
bearers welcoming the children to
school. Throughout the day, activi-
ties included a special student-led
minyan with Hallel, Torah and haf-
tarah reading, an outdoor obstacle
course organized by the JCC Center
Day Camps and Tamarack Camps,
fun activities designed and staffed by
seventh- and sixth-graders for grades
K-2, fifth-graders donning Dead Sea

mud masks and a school-wide Israeli
zimriyah (song session) — with
eighth-graders "virtually" joining in
from Israel during their class trip,
where they enjoyed Yom HaAtzmaut
in the Jewish state.
Staff members prepared a lunch
of falafel, hummus, Israeli salad and
pita; dessert was a gigantic "Happy
Birthday, Israel" cake that fed all.
The day concluded with Hillel's
Annual Israel Independence Day
Carnival. More than 500 people
attended the event and enjoyed
games, prizes, cookie decorating,
airbrush tattooing, petting farm ani-
mals and an Israeli Cafe.
Fostering a love and support for
Israel is one of Hillel's core values,
so these days are taken seriously.
The observances often provide some
of the most memorable events in a
child's life at Hillel. ❑
