he weather cooperated Sunday for the
seventh annual Walk for Israel cel-
ebrating Israel Independence Day at
hosting synagogue, Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield. The walk drew close to 1,500 people
even though a competing event featuring for-
mer Secretary of State Madeleine Albright drew
about 800 people.
Prior to the walk, participants heard Gary
Kenzer, executive director of HonestReporting.
corn, speak about the Internet and advocacy
for Israel. They also enjoyed a complimentary
lunch from Jerusalem Pizza, entertainment from
Power, Styer and Green and the Zamir Chorale,
Israeli dancing and blow-ups for the children.
The walk made its way south on Orchard Lake
Road to Orchard Lake Middle School, with the
line of people (and some dogs) stretching more
than a mile long.
The two round-trip tickets to Israel from El
Al that were raffled are still up in the air at press
time because a politician won them and cannot
accept them.
Major sponsor of the walk is the Ford Motor
Co. Fund, with most local Jewish organizations
and synagogues as co-sponsors. ❑
