Israeli ambassador's speech
focuses on Jewish unity.
sraeli Ambassador to the U.S.
Michael Oren gave the keynote
speech to a packed room at the
Jewish Council for Public Affairs
Plenum, which took place May 5-8 in
Detroit.
The speech focused
on the importance of
unity between Israelis
and the American
Jewish community.
Oren began by
speaking about the
challenges faced by
his Israeli children,
Michael Oren
including upheaval in
the region, the stalled
peace process, political polarization,
economic difficulties and bureaucracy.
He related a story about his daughter in
Beersheva, who worried about making
the 200-yard sprint from her apartment
to the nearest bomb shelter as rockets
rained down from neighboring Gaza.

Israelis and American Jews share
many concerns, Oren said, but some
American Jews — "from a misplaced
sense of caring" — are creating schisms
within worldwide Jewry.
He cited a recent example of a
planned boycott of Israeli products
made in the West Bank as an impracti-
cal and misguided solution by American
Jews who are against Israeli settlements
in that region.
"Discriminating Jews by where they
live is egregiously dangerous:' Oren
said. "Where does that get you closer to
peace?
"Something is wrong here he added.
"What happened to that motto 'We are
one'? At stake is nothing less than our
unity as the Jewish people."
Israel, he added, is the birthright of
all Jewish people.
Jews can and will disagree about
Israeli policy, Oren said, but that doesn't
mean they love Israel any less.
There's room at the table for divergent
views. What's most important, Oren
said, was that Jews everywhere work
toward Israel's continued existence and
security, call on Palestinians to reject
terror and return to the negotiation
table for continued talks on a two-state
solution, and take pride in the country's
successes.

of us." El
Jewish Motorcycle Club
Seeks Additional Bikers
The Chai Riders Motorcycle Club, the
area's only Jewish biker group, is looking
for riders to join its ranks.
Formed in 1994, the group meets 9:30
a.m. Sundays at the Boneyard-Dunkin
Donuts parking lot on Orchard Lake
Road south of 14 Mile in Farmington
Hills. From there, they ride for a couple
of hours before stopping for a late
breakfast.
The club welcomes male and female
riders provided they are licensed and
insured.
Farrell Reis of Birmingham has been
riding with the group for eight years.
"The friendships I've developed and
the riding skills I've honed are a direct
result of my participation in this terrific
group:' he said.
The Chai Riders are active in
Holocaust remembrance and par-
ticipate in programs throughout the
year. Annually, they join the "Ride to
Remember" as one of 45 Jewish motor-
cycle groups from the U.S. and Canada.
