FINE CHINESE DINING

Nashman's numerous theater credits
include roles in A Midsummer Night's
Dream, Hedda Gabler and Picasso at the
Lapin Agile. For the Winnipeg Jewish
Theatre, he appeared in None Is Too
Many.
Film credits include Jonestown:
Paradise Lost, Cinderella Man and The
Pact.
"I generate a lot of my own work,"
Nashman says. "I develop plays and then
tour them. I find the most fulfillment
when I have a personal stake in what
I'm doing.
"Hirsch is my fourth one-man show.
Another that I do is Kafka and Son; I
play the great Czech Jewish writer Franz
Kafka and his father, Hermann.
"I have played Einstein, Freud, Rabbi
Akiva and even Allen Ginsberg — many
significant Jews in history"
Nashman, married to a French teach-
er and the father of three, wanted his
family to experience Jewish culture on a
continuing basis so he suggested spend-
ing a year in Israel.
"Living in Jerusalem was an adven-
ture," he says. "I did some work there.

"I am very aware that I was dealt a
Jewish hand in life, and I feel that part
of my journey is understanding what
that means:"
Nashman feels that much of the
fun he experiences relates to his work,
directly and indirectly. Travel is an
indirect dimension, and he recently was
in Calgary doing a production he devel-
oped and directed: The Snow Queen, a
Hans Christian Andersen story adapted
for string quartet and actor.
A yoga practitioner, he also plays
hockey once a week.
"We hope to break some ground with
the content of Hirsch and the style of
presentation," Nashman says. "Ticket
holders should get ready for a ride that
is going to keep them at the edge of
their seats."

The Stratford Shakespeare
Festival presents Hirsch June
20-Sept.14 at the Studio Theatre.

tional arrangements at the request of
director Michael Mayer in 1998, intro-
duced the "Beethoven" song at Detroit's
Fisher Theater.
"I was told to give the musical more
of a contemporary feeling without
making it something that it wasnr he
says. "Everything had to be approved
by Charles Schulz (creator of the comic
strip on which the musical is based)."
Although the composer-lyricist won't
be visiting Stratford this summer, he
has watched many productions in dif-
ferent seasons.
"Seeing the shows is great, but I also
love the whole social atmosphere at
Stratford," says Lippa, who is working
on a new musical, Big Fish, headed
for Broadway under the direction of
Susan Stroman.
"You go to lunch with people and
ask what they saw yesterday, and you
tell them what you saw. It's great talk-
ing about the plays."
One Stratford production likely
to provide some talking points is
IvIacHomer, a one-man tour-de-force.
Actor-comedian Rick Miller uses
the voices of characters from The
Simpsons to tell the story of Macbeth.
"When you have a canon of
Shakespeare plays more than 400
years old, the question is how you
stay loyal to them and yet bring in
some reinvention and reimagination,"
says Goldbloom, also chairman of
the board of directors of the Mental
Health Commission of Canada.

"MacHomer is an extraordinary way
in to one of Shakepeare's most popular
tragedies."
Goldbloom, a member of the Reform
Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto and a
supporter of the United Jewish Appeal,
takes on the Stratford helm as artistic
director Des McAnuff turns over his
responsibilities to Antoni Cimolino.
"To be in the presence of the talent
that graces our stages makes me realize
why I made the right decision going
to medical school," jokes Goldbloom,
who tried acting as an undergraduate
student at Harvard. "Being at Stratford
reminds me why those performers are
where they are and why I'm not."
Other plays scheduled this season
are 42nd Street, Wanderlust, Elektra,
The Best Brothers and The War of 1812,
the last presented on a fifth stage
added for this production.
"The festival is extraordinarily grate-
ful for the continuing attendance and
philanthropic support of people from
the Detroit area," Goldbloom says. "It's
unusual to have an arts organization in
Canada that has such American loyalty.
Some Americans were here since the
theater was in a tent." 7
