Oak Park Woman Injured In Hit-And-Run

DESIGNS IN DECORATOR WOOD & LAMINATES, LTD.

n Friday, April 27, Rita Mazur,
79, of Oak Park did what she'd
done countless times before.
She left her apartment to walk to the
ALDI store on Greenfield in Lincoln
Plaza to pick up some milk. Family
members say she left around 7 p.m.
About 45 minutes later, they got an
urgent phone call from Oak Park police.
Mazur was found lying in an alley behind
the shopping center
critically injured after
a hit-and-run accident
"The driver hit
my mom so badly
that she is now in the
hospital on life sup-
port:' said Mazur's
daughter Viktoriya
Rita Mazur
Strumban. "She has
extensive injuries to
almost all internal organs and multiple
broken bones. The prognosis is very bad.
"My family is in shock. Its unthinkable
how a human being could leave this victim
in such a condition without calling 911:"
At press time, the family and investiga-
tors did not have a description of the vehi-

cle involved. They're hoping surveillance
cameras from nearby businesses may have
picked up something. Based on Mazur's
injuries, doctors believe it was a large
vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.
Oak Park police believe the driver
involved knew he or she hit someone.
"In my opinion, it was a deliberate act
to leave the scene said Steve Cooper,
the police department's acting public
safety director. "She was basically left to
die there in the roadway."
Rita Mazur and her husband, _
Mikhail, 87, immigrated to the United
States from Kiev, Ukraine, in 1991.
They've been married for 45 years; they
have one child and three grandchildren.
Rita worked as an accountant but has
been retired for years. Her family mem-
bers describe her as bright, sweet and
sensitive, someone who was always will-
ing to extend her hand to help others.
"I truly hope there were witnesses
and they will contact the Oak Park
Police department:' Strumban said.
"Any small detail may help find the
driver and the car."
