OTPOURRI
Forget the rumors
you may have heard and are still
hearing ... The site of the former
7 Restaurant and Bar on Orchard Lake
Road and 15 Mile, West Bloomfield, will be
Prime 29, an upscale steakhouse with lux-
urious stylings ... Operating partner Dave
Duey is well-known for his general man-
ager stints at Fox & Hounds, Tribute and
the new Joe Muer's Seafood ... Opening of
Prime 29 is slated for May 29.
GOOD WORDS are being received
about the new Polish Kitchen restau-
rant on 13 Mile Road, east of Greenfield,
Royal Oak, former site of Ann Sayles and
Fiddleheads eateries ... Visitors tell of
enjoying its authentic Polish cuisine ...
One reader can't rave enough about the
stuffed cabbage and potato pancakes
topped with goulash.
DANDY DINING
DEAL
Lamb Ribs,
six good-sized meaty
bones, $6.95 com-
plete, dinner or lunch,

and breadbasket ...
One week only at this
price, Thursday, April
26 through Thursday,
May 3, 2012 ... No cou-
pons ... Siegel's Deli, Maple, just west of
Haggerty, Commerce Township.
TALK WAS HOT that Matt Prentice had
been looking to offset the loss of his Deli
Uniques and Plaza Deli by also opening
up one or more Jewish delicatessens ... As
of now, however, the chatter has reduced
itself to a flickering small flame.
WHERE THEY ARE
Al Balooly,
onetime owner of former Topinka's
Country House and Topinka's on the
Boulevard, both in Detroit, is finally look-
ing to come back where he belongs in the

...

restaurant business ... To be
amongst the Jewish people
who staunchly followed him
until he opened too far away
... Al knows the restaurant
game more than many of
today's successful owners.
NUMEROUS REQUESTS
via email have come asking
where excellent cheesecake
can be gotten in this region
... "I do not know of anyone
in the metro area that makes
cheesecake writes Patti Phillips. "I want-
ed to order a chocolate cheesecake recent-
ly to have within two weeks but could find
no one that made a good one."
Patti has since discovered that Pronto
in Royal Oak will make a 9-inch chocolate
cheesecake as a special
order ... "You need a
week in advance so they
can get the ingredients
and the cost is $38:'
writes Patti ... She also
learned that Whole
Foods makes 2-inch
and 3-inch round
chocolate cheesecakes
for sweet trays.
QUESTION &
ANSWER DEPT. ...
"I've often wondered why it is called 'dirty
rice' at Indian restaurants. Am I the only
one who it turns off?" ... Solomon Altman
[No, Solomon, there are others who also
don't understand and so shy away too from
"dirty rice." It is actually a Cajun dish made
from white rice and is given a dark look
because of some of its ingredients: green
pepper, celery, onion and, at times, with
little pieces of chicken liver or giblets that
make it dark ... Many Indian restaurants
do not use meat, and use soy sauce or
something else instead to give it that look.]

READER MINI REVIEW
From
Dennis Silber ... "People looking for a
wonderful place in the Boca Raton, Fla.,
area might want to try breakfast or brunch
while on the beach at the Dune Deck.
"Just about a 20-minute ride north of
Boca, on the beach in Lantana, the food
at Dune Deck is quite unique and deli-
cious. Crepes, pancakes and varieties of
French toast such as creme brulee (made
with Dune Deck's own homemade challah
bread), stuffed Bananas Foster (loaded
with pears, apples, dates, figs and raisins)
and tropical (made with panettone bread,
topped with tropical fruits (kiwi and
strawberries).
"I had the Lobster Eggs Benedict (load-
ed with lobster) and tasted the scrump-
tious smoked salmon crepes (filled with
cream cheese, scallions and capers). My
wife, Debbie, had the berry yogurt crepes
made with homemade yogurt, honey and
fresh berries. Matzah brei is made on
request.
"We came back for lunch and enjoyed
gazpacho and chicken brochette (two
skewers of chicken breast marinated in

...

a tasty sauce, rice, Greek salad and pita
bread)."
FOR THOSE WHO asked, yes, that
$100 is completely deductible for Variety,
the Children's Charity's four-course din-
ner from the menu plus wine pairings
Saturday, May 5, two days before Morels'
reopening on Northwestern, Farmington
Hills ... When calling for reservations,
remember that dinner reservations are
available between 6:15-7:45 p.m. ... Call
Variety at (248) 258-5511.
OLDER-THAN-OLD goodie that once
made Methuselah laugh ... About the
Jewish gent sitting on a park bench eating
his Passover lunch when a blind man came
by and sat next to him ... He gave him a
sheet of matzah as a friendly gesture and
the blind man handled the matzah, looked
puzzled and said, "Who wrote this junk?"
ALMOST 100 were there to fete a gent
who was celebrating his 90th birthday
... Of those who ate, drank, listened and
danced to the wonderful music of Mel Ball
and his five-piece group including a fine
songstress singing never-dying songs that
Jay Grant loves, most of them were family
and close friends, some who came all the
way from California to pay birthday rever-
ence to Jay.
It was at the Roman Village on Dix Road
in Dearborn, whose always-excellent food
and service were high complements to the
occasion ... His wife, Marion, displayed
her uncanny memory of yesteryears and
joined others with tears in their eyes as
they silently recalled the years his only
thought in life was working at whatever it
took to keep his family together.
CONGRATS
To Sidney Moss on his
100th birthday ... To Jimmy Gottfurcht on
his 72nd birthday ... To Rhonda Verona
on her birthday. ❑
