you're going to do
with the informa-
tion': said Nancie
Petrucelli, M.S.,
C.G.C., senior
genetic counselor
and coordina-
tor at Karmanos'
Nancie
Cancer Genetic
Petrucelli
Counseling
Service. "If
someone tests positive for a gene
mutation, it tells us that we need
to monitor them more closely. This
has implications not only for the
individual, but also for their family."
Knoppow met with Michal
Simon, M.D., M.P.H., director of the
Cancer Genetic Counseling Service
and a medical oncologist, to discuss
her results.
Knoppow said now that she
knows she has tested positive
for the BRCA2 mutation, she can
begin keeping close tabs on her
own health and to have regular
mammograms, surveillance tests
like breast MRIs and transvaginal
ultrasounds.
"The times I get scared are when
I'm waiting for the test results:' she
said. "It is a relief, though, to know
I have the mutation. I'm hoping for
years of relief rather than years of
stress by undergoing these exams
and tests."
David Blatt, executive director
of the MJSF, said the foundation
is pleased to be in a position to
assist those who could benefit from
genetic testing and counseling.
"The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation takes great pride in
the Karmanos-MJSF partnership
and in knowing that individuals,
who otherwise might not have had
the opportunity to be tested, have
benefited from the MJSF Genetic
Testing Assistance Fund': he said.
"Averting a cancer diagnosis
through awareness is an important
step in the eradication of cancer,
and we are very pleased our grant
to Karmanos has been beneficial to
so many."
