edd Handelsman opened his
first Better Health Market in
1999 — a grocery store with a
focus on healthy living, where custom-
ers can find vitamins and supplements,
fresh produce, grass-fed beef, fish,
poultry and dairy products.
On May 1, Handelsman is opening
a new 10,000-square-foot, $1 mil-
lion store in Bloomfield Township on
Telegraph north of Square Lake Road
on the east side of the street. The new
store joins 11 Better Health Market
stores in Metro Detroit, two in Lansing
and an online outlet.
"My customers and friends kept
asking me when I would open a larger
market in Oakland County that would
showcase my vast variety of products.
While it took a while to locate and
secure the right location, I'm confident
we have it here in Bloomfield Hills,"
Handelsman said.
Handelsman plans on hiring at least
25-30 people to work at the new loca-
tion.
While Tedd knows his stuff, he said
that nobody knows it better than
his father, Herb. At age 83, Herb, "the
herb" Handelsman has been living a
healthy lifestyle for decades. The elder
Handelsman brings his knowledge,
expertise and passion to work every
day as he patrols the aisles of Better
Health Stores assisting customers. "I
always hope my advice, in at least some
small way, will help them:' Herb said.
Better Health will also sell made-to-
order sandwiches, homemade soups
and salads for those looking for a
healthy lunch.
Better Health Markets also conducts
free seminars on healthier living,
hosted by knowledgeable product
leaders and developers. Well-known
locals, such as Detroit Pistons strength
and conditioning coach Arnie Kander
and fitness expert Peter Nielsen, will
be appearing at the new Bloomfield
Township location soon.
