remember seeing my first
3D movies ever at the
Americana Theater on
Greenfield Road. They were
the Three Stooges and Friday
the 13th, Part 3, and it was
always a challenge keeping
those flimsy paper glasses on
straight and not shmearing the lens
with my butter-covered fingers.
These days, with so many 3D titles
coming out on BluRay disc, one of
the most common questions asked
by my clients is, "Should I buy a new
3D TV?"
First let's get one thing straight: 3D
is just a "feature" of newer model 2D
televisions, an enhancement just like
1080p or 240Hz. It does not mean
that you have to wear those funky
glasses just to watch CNN. It is still a
regular two-dimensional TV.

To 3D or not to 3D... that is the question.

Think of 2D viewing as
looking at a painting and
3D viewing as looking at a
sculpture. 3D is a process
that tricks the brain into a
visual perception of depth,
a phenomenon known as
"stereopsis."
But before you go shlepping a
new 65-inch Sony from Costco, you
should know that a small percent of
people suffer from "stereo blindness,"
a condition that will prevent you
from seeing 3D content. Still others
report 3D viewing side effects such
as headaches and nausea.
TVs aside, there are also additional
hardware considerations. In order to
view 3D, you need 3D glasses.
To play 3D BluRay discs, you will
also need a 3D capable BluRay player
— and just because you already had

an HDMI cable attached to your old
high-definition TV, it may not be an
HDMI 1.4 version cable and would
need to be changed. This may be
difficult if your cables are "fished"
inside the walls.
The bottom line: If you are in the
market for a new TV and plan to
purchase one of the better models,
it is going to come 3D ready. With
rumors of the Star Wars saga coming
out on 3D BluRay disc and the
evolution of ESPN-3D and other 3D
cable channels, you may just enjoy
donning those glasses for a little stay-
at-home entertainment. I'll go melt
some butter! ID
