hat steak and potato, that classic
car, ... look again, these are cakes.
And they are all the creation of
Heather Anne Leavitt, who is celebrating
the grand opening of her Sweet Heather
Anne pastry shop in Ann Arbor this
Saturday, April 21, from noon to 5 p.m.
The new shop is at 921 N. Main St., and
yes, free samples will be available.
Leavitt credits her education at the
University of Michigan School of Art and
Design for setting her on a rather unique
career path.
As a part of her education, she studied
in Florence, Italy, for a semester. It was
there where she first thought about apply-
ing her artistic talents toward the culinary
world.
"Though I had hoped that immersing
Heather Anne Leavitt
myself in the realm of the Italian masters
would rub off on my artistic prowess, I
found myself more interested in the per-
fect foam atop my cappuccino:' she says.
"I began to cook and realized that I loved
it."
She says her time in Italy began to
revolve around trips to the local market,

Besides the custom designs and high
level of art in her products, Leavitt says
use of local ingredients is another distin-
guishing factor of her bakery. The butter,
dairy, fruit and vegetables are locally
obtained. She makes connections with
farmers and food companies at the Ann
Arbor Farmers Market.
Leavitt also conducts baking classes.
Custom classes are created for groups of
four or more. Information is available at
www.sweetheatheranne. com.
"I love what I do, and look at each new
cake as a challenge to create something
beautiful that will make someone's day;'
she says.
Sweet Heather Anne will be open by
appointment from Tuesdays through
Saturdays. Contact: sweetheatheranne@
gmail.com or (734) 913-2025.

When she returned to U-M art school,
she kept her focus on food. For her art
school thesis, she worked with several
food producers and artisans in the Ann
Arbor area and created a series of edible
monuments to honor each one.
After graduating in 2007, she worked
with Eve Aronoff as a cook at Eve
the Restaurant. She also worked with
Courtney Clark of Cake Nouveau on a
series of Food Network Challenges. "Both
experiences have been influential in
developing who I am as a cook and an
artist:' she says.
Until recently, she had been operating
her Sweet Heather Anne pastry business
out of a commercial kitchen in Ann Arbor.
She specializes in cakes for all kinds of
events, including weddings and b'nai
mitzvot.
