Can You Benefit From Asset Protection Planning? frontlines The phrase "asset protection planning" means The Greatest Summer Of His Life Michael Robbins Special to the Jewish News against the claims of existing and prospective creditors. T he year was 1944. The United States was at war, and the economy was still recovering from the Great Depression. It was a very difficult year for most Americans, but for one 16-year-old Cass Tech High fresh- man, it was the summer of his life. Jerry Robbins, now 83 and a lifetime resident of Detroit, wrote the Detroit Baseball Club a letter in the summer of 1944 asking to be bat boy. He was quite surprised when he received a response from the general manager of the Detroit Tigers, J.A. Zeller, requesting that he contact them after he finished the school year. Robbins did so and was hired by the team. For baseball, 1944 was the darkest of the war years, with most of the game's star players scattered around the globe serving their county;such as Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller, Ted Williams and Detroit's own Hank Greenberg. Nonetheless, baseball continued Sid provided the sports fans of Detroit with an escape. Robbins' responsibilities included not only being the bat boy, but also making sure that the clubhouse and players' uniforms were in order. However, it was the contact with the players that he most fondly remembers. "I remember the 1944 Detroit Tigers like it was yesterday:' Robbins said. "They were managed by Steve O'Neill and fin- ished the season one game out of first place. They sent four players to the All Star game, including Hal Newhauser, Dizzy Trout, Pinky Higgins and Rudy York." Robbins recalls how different the game was back then. For example, Hal Newhauser won 29 games, 25 of which were complete, and he pitched more than 300 innings. "In today's game, that would never happen:' Robbins said. The Tigers were winning 8-0 with Dizzy Trout on the mound. In the top of the 9th inning, Robbins began to collect the bats in the visi- tor's dugout when Connie Mack yelled at him, "Hey, kid, put those bats down; the game is not over yet." "Sorry, Mr. Mack:' said the embarrassed Robbins. At the end of the summer, Robbins left Briggs Stadium and returned to Cass Tech. That same year, Hank Greenberg returned to the Detroit Tigers and they won the World Series. Robbins was in the stands when Greenberg hit his first home run of the 1945 season following his return from active mili- tary duty and was also present at the 1945, 1968, 1984 and 2006 World Series.
