Yom HaShoah Events
At Holocaust Center
The annual citywide commemora-
tion of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust
Remembrance Day, will take place
at the Holocaust Memorial Center
Zekelman Family Campus (HMC) in
Farmington Hills on Sunday after-
noon, April 22.
The events will begin at noon with
"For Every Person, There is a Name a
project of the world Jewish community
during which volunteers read aloud
names of only a tiny fraction of those
killed in the Holocaust.
A formal program will begin at 1
p.m. and will feature the posting of
colors by the Jewish War Veterans,
Department of Michigan. A candle-
lighting ceremony by Holocaust survi-
vors and their children and grandchil-
dren and led by Stephen M. Goldman,
executive director of the Holocaust
Memorial Center and Abe Weberman,
president of Shaarit Haplaytah, follows.
The event will also feature origi-
nal responsive readings, appropriate
musical selections by Cantor Leonard
Gutman accompanied by pianist
Gary Rimar and the reciting of the
Mourner's Kaddish. It will culminate
by inviting attendees to kindle person-
eral courses on the Holocaust and has
made a great impact on the lives of his
students. Until his recent retirement, he
directed the Voice/Vision Oral History
Archive Project (www.holocaust.
umd.umich.edu ) and has conducted
more than 300 in-depth interviews of
Holocaust survivors for the project.
Lichtman is honored as a child
survivor of the Holocaust who works
tirelessly with many local, national
and international organizations to help
teach others about the suffering of the
last generation of survivors. Through
his work with the HEC (Holocaust
Education Coalition), C.H.A.I.M.,
Hidden Children/Child Survivors of
Michigan, World Federation of Jewish
Child Survivors of the Holocaust and
Descendants (current vice president)
and the Holocaust Memorial Center, he
has shared his knowledge and wisdom
with many Jewish and non-Jewish stu-
dents alike.
