Destination: Detroit
"As our girls got older, we decided
to move to America so they could
have the opportunity to meet
some nice Jewish men," explained
Amalie. "I had a cousin in New
York who helped us get a visa,
and Max had a friend in Detroit,
and that is where we ended up
moving."
The Jewish Federation provided
Amalie and her family with a place
to stay when they first arrived
in Detroit until they were able to
find a place of their own. Their
first house was on Ashton Street
in Detroit where they lived for 15
years before moving to Southfield.
"It was very hard for us in the
beginning because we didn't know
the language," said Amalie.
"Eventually everything worked
out for the best, and my daugh-
ters all married very nice men.
I now have a beautiful family of
nine grandchildren and 16 great-
grandchildren. My family is very
good to me. The saddest parts of
my life were losing my husband
of 58 years to emphysema and
losing my youngest daughter to
cancer. These things I don't like to
talk about because they make me
very sad."
Amalie was 80 when her hus-
band passed away. She was sud-
denly left with the task of paying
bills and learning how to become
independent. Keeping busy up
until her early-90s, she swam,
exercised and went walking every
day. Amalie only recently started
using a walker because of arthri-
tis in her knee.
Now, Amalie loves making
jewelry and particularly enjoys
knitting scarves, afghans and
sweaters not only for herself, but
also for her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
"I do like living where I am [at
Fleishman Residence], but can
you believe that so many people
here have boyfriends and girl-
friends? Can you imagine that, at
their age? Not me! I never looked
at another man because I had a
wonderful husband and family."
With her close-"knit" fam-
ily near by, Amalie continues to
enjoy her well-deserved life, look-
ing good and feeling good and
always with something to smile
about. LI
