Remember The Inaction
During The Holocaust

Three hundred of us jammed the audito-
rium of the Holocaust Memorial Center
in Farmington Hills on March 20 to view
Against the Tide, a compelling film that
documents what happened in the United
States during the Holocaust.
The film addresses the attitudes of
President Roosevelt and his senior advis-
ers, who used the pretext of winning the
war against the Nazis to block efforts to
increase Jewish immigration to the U.S.
and contrasts the events in America with
heart-wrenching heroic stories of the
doomed Jews of Europe and the lead-
ers of Polish Jewry who had faith that
their powerful brothers and sisters in the
United States would somehow be able to
save them.
It also highlights how a young activist,
Peter Bergson, challenged Washington
and the establishment Jewish organi-
zations to demand that the rescue of
Europe's Jews become a top priority for
American Jews.

In the lobby, following the film we
discussed how the West needs to learn
from history and if, God forbid, Israel is
attacked with nuclear weapons, all the
civilized world will do is wring their
hands in shame as they did in 1945.
We in the Jewish community, our
leaders and all others need to strongly
communicate to our national leadership
to swiftly stop the threat from Iran. I
congratulate the Zionist Organization
of America-Michigan, co-sponsors
StandWithUs-Michigan, B'nai B'rith
International Great Lakes Region and
their many supporters for their efforts to
educate.

Social Media A Topic
Of Beth Ahm Scholar

Rabbi David Hoffman, who
teaches Talmud and rabbin-
ics at the Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York City, will
share insights as scholar-in-
residence at
Congregation
Beth Ahm
in West
Bloomfield
on Friday-
Saturday,
April 20-21.
On Friday
Rabbi David
night,
after
Hoffman
6 p.m. ser-
vices and
7 p.m. dinner, he will discuss
the prevelance of social media
in his talk,"Google, God and
Facebook: Challenges to Jewish
Notions of Intimacy in an
Internet Age:' The cost for din-
ner is $20 per adult, $8 per child
ages 6-12, or $48 per household.
RSVP for dinner by April 17 to
(248) 851-6880.
His teaching continues at
8:45 a.m. Saturday when he
addresses, "The Future of Faith:
Changing Definitions of Jewish
Identity in the 12th Century."
Maimonides, the pillar of medi-
eval Jewish thought, changed the
notion of what it meant for a Jew
to have faith. But by radically
changing the concept of faith
for Jews, Maimonides created
enormous problems for Jewish
identity.
A highlight of Hof mans
visit will be a special learn-
ing opportunity for youth ages
10-14, along with their parents,
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Hoffman
will discuss "Made in the Image
of God:' specifically, why should
Jews help others through acts of
lovingkindness and tzedakah.
To complete the weekend's
teaching, Hoffman will speak
about "Religious Passion and
Religious Fundamentalism:
The Dangers of the Religious
Experience" at 1 p.m. Saturday.
All events are free (except for
the dinner), and all are welcome.

Rabbi Steven Rubenstein at

Yes, IRS and the State
