Two West Bloomfield High School students, Adam and Daniel Cooper, have created commercials to warn middle school students about the dangers of underage drinking as part of a contest sponsored by the non- profit Courageous Persuaders. Each year, Courageous Persuaders challenges high school students to create a TV commercial to educate middle schoolers about the dangers of underage drinking. In 2007, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) became the primary spon- sor followed the next year by the Michigan Secretary of State. The Coopers, twin juniors at West Bloomfield High who are members of Temple Israel, have been making films since age 5, when they made their first movie at summer camp. They learned about the competition through their school. Both of their entries have made the cut of 60 finalists for online judg- ing for the State Farm Fan Favorite Award. You can watch the videos and vote for them online at bit.ly/ HCyHUg. Dead End, entry No. 10 on the site, is Adam's film. "I have heard too many stories about people get- ting hurt from alcohol and drugs, and this was a great opportunity to warn middle schoolers to stay away:' Adam said. There Are No Second Chances, No. 44 on the site, is Daniel's entry. "I came up with the idea for mine when I was considering the fact that often times kids and adults act as if they can just rewind and undo their actions:' Daniel said. Both of the films star younger brother, Josh, a seventh-grader at Orchard Lake Middle School. Proud parents are Mike and Beth Cooper. The Coopers are no strangers to filmmaking. They also wrote and directed the Orchard Lake Student Film Festival's comedy, L.U.C.K., which was named a "Best of Show" recipient at the Michigan Student Film and Video Festival as well as the Orchard Lake Film Festival. The film, produced by fellow West Bloomfield High School student Chris McClellan, will be shown on the winners' reel at the DIA on Saturday, April 28. Both Adam and Daniel say they plan to pursue careers in filmmaking. "I could never see myself doing any- thing else Daniel said. Voters have until May 1 to choose their favorite Courageous Persuader finalist online. The grand prize- winning commercial will be broadcast on TV, and top entries will be shown at NAIAS Education Day: A World of Opportunities at the North American International Auto Show as well as at Secretary of State offices across Michigan. Winning filmmakers win scholar- ships, and if either Adam or Daniel win, West Bloomfield High School would receive $2,500 as well. ri
