A

group of discharged Israeli
combat soldiers will cross the
bridge from military to civilian
life with the help of the Israel Center for
Treatment of Psychotrauma (ICTP) and
Congregation Beth Shalom of Oak Park.
Each year, thousands of Israelis
are discharged from the military and
thrust back into civilian life. The dif-
ficult adjustment takes most soldiers six
months to a year to complete. Those who
have experienced stressful combat situa-
tions may take longer.
ICTP is based at Herzog Hospital in
Jerusalem, Israel's leading center for

geriatric and psychiatric health care.
The organization developed its "Peace of
Mind" program to strengthen the emo-
tional resilience of discharged combat
soldiers.
Peace of Mind gives veterans the tools
to mitigate the impact of the battle expe-
riences they endured during service. For
most, this is the first time they are able
to talk openly about and process their
experiences.
Peace of Mind has three components
over three months. The program starts
with a two-day workshop in Israel that
reunites the former soldiers — all come
from a single military unit — and
starts them talking about their combat
experiences. The second part, six weeks

Surviving Terrorism
And Other Traumas

Zieva Konvisser, Ph.D.
Special to the Jewish News

I

met Professor Danny Brom,
founder and general director of
the Israel Center for the Treatment
of Psychotrauma (ICTP), in 2003 when
I was working on my doctoral dis-
sertation with survivors of terrorism
in Israel.
My work focuses on resilience —
bouncing back after adversity and
moving on with life as usual — and
post-traumatic growth — moving
forward so that life after the event
is somehow better than before. My
work emphasizes that people can find
hope and meaning after surviving a
terrorist attack or any life crisis, and
that continuing personal distress and
growth often coexist. ICTP shares that
perspective.
ICTP is a world-renowned innovator
in the research and treatment of the
wide-ranging effects of psychotrauma.
It provides a huge array of professional
services for trauma survivors in Israel
and elsewhere around the world.
The trauma center deals with chil-
dren, families, victims of terrorism,

IDF combat soldiers, and survivors of
illness and natural or manmade disas-
ters. Through integrated treatment and
recovery programs, ICTP helps victims
develop vital coping skills to deal with
the emotional fallout of trauma. They
have several valuable programs in
addition to Peace of Mind.
Their Metiv Crisis Center provides
psychotherapy and crisis intervention
to individuals and first responders. The
Resilience Unit provides training for
4,000 teachers, counselors and school
psychologists to proactively build resil-
ience and to screen, diagnose and treat
children for post-traumatic symptoms.
ICTP programs also reach out
to other traumatized communities
in Israel, including police officers,
Holocaust educators, Ethiopian Jews
and Bedouin. El

Zieva Konvisser, Ph.D., of Orchard Lake,

is a trauma researcher who serves on the

international board of the Israel Center

for the Treatment of Psychotrauma. Her

upcoming book, Living Beyond Terrorism:

Israeli Stories of Hope and Healing, tells

the remarkable true stories of survivors

of terrorism in Israel.
