rom your first conversation with Jonny Imerman, it's not hard
to imagine that when the Bloomfield Hills native was battling
testicular cancer after his diagnosis in 2001 at age 26, his che-
motherapy hospital room was always overflowing with visitors.
Imerman, 37, exudes an energy that's hard to come by — a combina-
tion of unapologetic cheerfulness, compassion and sheer ambition, traits
that earn him throngs of friends wherever he goes and have helped cata-
pult his Chicago-based nonprofit organization, Imerman Angels, into the
largest one-on-one cancer support network in the world.
More than 4,000 people use its buddy system that matches cancer
fighters with mentors who've beaten the same cancer, and even matches
caregivers with mentors who have stood in their shoes.
