David Wolkinson
launches campaign
for state House.

Shelli Liebman Dorfman

Contributing Writer

A

diverse crowd filled a meet-
ing room at the Bloomfield
Township Public Library on
March 12 to hear David Wolkinson
announce his intent to run for state
representative in the 40th District.
The 31-year-old attorney officially
launched his candidacy during a cam-
paign kickoff event, speaking with
community members and laying out
his plan of action.
"We need to make
Michigan the best
place in the world
to do business —
period," Wolkinson
told the group that
included colleagues,
supporters in kip-
pot,
leadership of
David
the
Oakland
County
Wolkinson
Republican Party
and a group of West Bloomfield High
School students who attended for extra
credit for their AP government class.
"Both my sisters no longer live
in Michigan," Wolkinson said. "For
them to even consider moving back
here, we need to create jobs for them.
I don't want the next generation of
Michiganders to have to face the same
pressure that my generation has felt
in terms of feeling required to leave
Michigan in order to pursue our
careers."
Running on the Republican ticket,
Wolkinson will vie for a seat being
vacated by the term-limited Rep.
Chuck Moss, R-Birmingham.
Wolkinson will compete Aug. 7 for
the Republican Party nomination
against Oakland County Commissioner
Dave Potts and Birmingham Board of
Education member Robert Lawrence.
He spent the past several months
laying the foundation for a campaign
structure after redistricting put his
residence in the 40th District, which
includes Birmingham, Bloomfield
Township, Bloomfield Hills and the
eastern half of West Bloomfield, where
Wolkinson lives.
This is Wolkinson's second attempt
at a seat in the Michigan House, having
an unsuccessful run to represent the
39th District in 2008.
"Some party insiders have implored
me to 'wait my turn, but I think the
transformations we need to make
to turn Michigan into the best place
