T he Bielski family, descendants of the renowned Jewish par- tisans responsible for saving hundreds of lives during the Holocaust and subjects of the 2008 feature film Defiance, recently announced the launch of the Jewish Safe Haven Fund (www.JewishSafeHavenFund.org), a new security initiative for Jewish com- munity centers overseas. JSHF will focus on identifying cen- ters that are at risk, installing "safe rooms," surveillance and other security equipment, and providing self-defense and emergency protocol training. "There is a real and deadly threat against hundreds of these centers across the globe said Jay Bielski, son of Zus Bielski and president of JSHF. "The centers should provide a safe haven for cultural and religious observances, but currently they are not equipped to deal with any actual dangers. Our goal is to secure these important centers of Jewish life so that they are safe for the local communities and for those travelihg abroad." The announcement comes in the wake of attempted bombings target- ing Jews in Thailand, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Events like the 2008 ter- rorist attack on the Chabad center in Mumbai, India, where five people, including the center's directors, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, were murdered are fresh on everyone's minds. "We were unable to provide a secu- rity solution ourselves:' said Rabbi Chanoch Gechtman, current director of the Mumbai Chabad center. The Jewish Safe Haven Fund will give us the opportunity to further increase our presence here, along with maintaining the safety of thousands of Jews who are here during the year. With security equipment and training, our center will be a much safer place." UNPARALLELED PARKING Our investment in our parking lot is an investment in your time.
