nother Yashinsky is in
charge of the Frankel Jewish
Academy baseball team.
Sam Yashinsky resigned as coach last
year after two seasons to begin stud-
ies at Kirksville College of Osteopathic
Medicine in Missouri.
Last month, brother
Joe Yashinsky was
named to replace him.
Joe had worked as a
volunteer assistant
coach with his brother.
But it was the Feb.
2
sports
column in
Joe Yashinsky
the Jewish News that
reported the coaching opening that gave
Joe the impetus to apply for the job.
"I'd been wondering all winter about
who was going to coach:' he said. fter
I read the article in the Jewish News, I_
emailed athletic director Alan Ramsden
that night."
Sam, 25, is the most storied athlete in
Frankel's 10-year history. He's the West
Bloomfield Jewish day school's first and
only Division I athlete and went on to
pitch for the University of Michigan
baseball team.
Frankel didn't win many baseball
games with Sam as coach — just two
each season — but Joe, 28, said his
younger brother had other accomplish-
ments that were more important.
"Sam was well aware of the team's
expectations as far as wins and losses,
so he did everything he could to make
sure the players had fun," he said. "He
also wanted them to improve."
Joe will follow the same path.
"I want to win more games, of course,
but that's something you can't really
control;' the Farmington Hills resident
said. "I'm focusing on what we can con-
trol, like how hard we work and making
the experience a good one"
Joe is happy with the turnout: 21
players are on the roster, including three
sophomores and eight freshmen, which
bodes well for the future. There also are
four seniors and six juniors.
"Because we have such a young team,
we're going to depend upon our seniors
for leadership and mentoring," Joe said.
Those seniors are Issac Kurzmann, Neil
Rosenthal, David Weinfield and Yale
Williams.
Rounding out the team are juniors
Jake Feldman, Michael Klar, Zach
Rosenthal, Teddy Sallen, Eli Sherizan
and Ethan Weinfield; sophomores A.J.
Baxter, Brian Langnas and Oliver Soble;
and freshmen Ben Canvasser, Jeremy
Cohn, Hershel Dorman, Issac Meyers,
Kyle Otis, Dean and Jacob Sallen and
Connor Tukel.
Opening day for the Cougars is
April 2, at Franklin Road Christian
School. They'll face Royal Oak Shrine
at Memorial Park in Royal Oak the next
day, take a break for Passover, then host
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood
on April 16 at Franklin Road Christian.
Frankel will play its home games at West
Bloomfield High School.
Sam and Joe participated in another
unique family moment five years ago.
Along with their father, Gary Yashinsky,
and another brother, Gabe Yashinsky,
they made up the entire outfield for two
innings for the Brotherhood II team in a
B'nai B'rith softball game.
Also that year, Joe did on- and off-air
work for the Detroit Tigers' radio and
TV crews while serving an internship
with the team.
Frankel is currently looking for an
assistant baseball coach. Candidates
should contact Athletic Director Alan
Ramsden at aramsden@frankelja.org or
(248) 592-5263, ext. 504.
Baseball is one of five spring sports at
the academy. The others are boys golf, and
girls softball, soccer and tennis. About
75 students tried out for the teams in a
school with an enrollment of about 220.
Perfection
Once Again
Chalk up another
300 game for
Lyle Schaefer.
The 53-year-old
Southfield resident
bowled his sixth
career perfect game
Lyle Schaefer
in January in the
University Men's
League at Country Lanes in Farmington
Hills. He also has five 800 series.
Schaefer bowled 224 and 268 before
rolling his latest 300 for a 792 series.
"I'm still looking to get an 800 series
that includes a 300 game he said.
"That's what I'm shooting for."
