Purim Palooza!

urim has always been popular among children at Temple Israel. This year's
first adult spiel proved so popular, there's already talk of making it an annual
event at the West Bloomfield synagogue.
More than 200 participants enjoyed Purim Palooza on March 7. They chose from
one of four activities — Scotch tasting, wine tasting, hamantashen-making and salsa
dancing — before gathering together for the Megillah reading and a clergy-in-cos-
tume spiel.
Cantor Michael Smolash wrote the script for the fun, irreverent musical telling of
the Purim story. Rabbi Harold Loss lovingly portrayed the late Rabbi M. Robert Syme
looking down on the Schmier Family Chapel. Cantorial Soloist Neil Michaels and
Rabbis Josh Bennett, Marla Hornsten and Arianna Gordon also commanded the spiel
spotlight.
"Purim at Temple Israel had always been very kid-centered," said Gordon, the syna-
gogue's education director. "We wanted to create a program that would empower adults
to celebrate Purim in a different kind of way!" ❑
