that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty and sexuality — and not in her intellect, skills and leader- ship capacities," Brickman added. The screening and discussion are part of two days of education and action against sexism and domestic abuse. Katz is sponsored by JCADA. On Monday, April 16, Katz will facilitate three different discussions about the roles we can play in reduc- ing the incidence of domestic abuse: • A Men's Call to Action: a breakfast for men at 7:30 a.m. at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. • A Community Call to Action: a lunch-and-learn at Jewish Family Service from noon-1:30 p.m. Social Work CEUs will be provided for this event only. •A Teens' Call to Action: for all community teens will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Reservations are required for all three events. Miss Representation was writ- ten and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. This powerful documen- tary exposes mainstream media's contribution to the under-repre- sentation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media's limited, often disparaging and sexist portrayals of women and girls. Stories from teen girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics offer many examples of demeaning portrayals in the media that impede women's ability to achieve leadership posi- tions and develop feelings of self- worth and power. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audi- ences armed with a new perspective. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Katz, Jean Kilbourne and Gloria Steinem add their voices and perspectives throughout the film. Tickets for the screening and dis- cussion with Katz are $10 for adults, $5 for teens and arranged prices for school and youth groups and media representatives.
