New Applications

BodyPartChart's appeal to young
and old alike is embedded in its
roots. Gray, a 50-year-old Bloom-
field Hills resident, founded the
company with Andrew Luckoff,
the son of a childhood friend from
Huntington Woods. The Gray and
Luckoff families brainstormed new
uses for the Fathead product and
came up with BodyPartChart. Luck-
off, a 21-year-old senior at Michigan
State University, cut his teeth as
an intern at the company during
the summers and remains involved
part-time during the school year.
Next year, he'll be the full-time
general manager.
"There are so many different
applications for the product," says
Luckoff, who's worked extensively
on the company's sales and market-
ing efforts. The product's "clean
look" not only improves upon
traditional anatomy charts, but also
has signage applications, he says. A
removable, reusable, professional-
looking Fathead could take the
place of an 8Y2-by-11-inch sheet of
paper indicating a patient's latex
allergy, for example.
The product could also be a mar-
keting tool for hospitals, like it was
for Detroit-based Karmanos Cancer
Center, which used BodyPartChart
signage around its elevators to an-
nounce its "most preferred hospital"
status. It can also put images and
signs in unusual places — like the
ceiling of a dentist's office or a
glass panel.
"Everything on the wall could be
Fathead material," explains Luckoff.
"I have a lot of confidence in the
company."
The medical field is showing its
confidence with continued sales
growth. Gray says BodyPartChart's
sales tripled from 2010 to 2011,
and are poised to increase as the
company gains international expo-

Brain Gain

For Luckoff, co-founding BodyPart-
Chart and learning all aspects of the
business provides a hefty incentive
for him to settle in Detroit after grad-
uation, while fellow graduates might
take jobs in Chicago or New York.
"It's an opportunity for him
[Luckoff] to stay here and help grow
this company we co-founded," says
Gray. "He's learned about the busi-
ness from the ground floor."
Luckoff's on-the-job training
aligns perfectly with Quicken Loans
founder and chairman and majority
owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers
Dan Gilbert's "brain gain" initiative
to keep young talent in Detroit,
which last year prompted the em-
ployment of 250 summer interns
for Quicken Loans and its subsidiar-
ies. This year, Gilbert plans to hire
600 such interns.
BodyPartChart, too, is committed
to brain gain. The company is small
now — seven employees, plus some
support from other Dan Gilbert
companies in the Compuware build-
ing — but plans to hire more help
this summer and is actively seeking
young professionals like Luckoff.
Brain gain seems to be working
on some level, perhaps in tandem
with other influences. According to
a recent New York Times article, De-
troit has seen a 59 percent increase
in college-educated residents under
age 35 over the last 10 years. De-
troit also made Forbes magazine's
"Cities with the Happiest Young
Professionals" list last fall.
"I'm very excited about what's
going on in Detroit," says Luckoff.
"Here's this city that's making a
huge comeback, and we have the
opportunity to be a part of it." ❑

Detroit with the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. The evening of March 2
included a discussion about religious Jewish life in Detroit and beyond among col-
lege students, long-time residents and young professionals.
