March 17 everyone is Irish
so you might as well
party like an Irish rock star. Bono?
According to Ryan
White, Plum
Market's beer buyer,
here are four Irish
beers —three well
known and one
microbrew — to
toast to this year's
St. Patrick's Day.
Guinness Stout: Opened in 1759
and maker of the best-known classic
stout. Each keg has a nitrogen widget
inside that, when tapped, pops open
the nitrogen and
produces the famous
thick foam head.
Guinness saves a
, small amount of
beer in the bottom
of each barrel; and
as it is refilled, it bit-
ters the taste of the beer to its roasted
coffee, chocolaty taste. Guinness is
sometimes mixed with Bass Ale,
from Britain, to make a Black
and Tan, but don't order one in
Ireland unless you know how to
fight. $7.99/four-pack.
Harp Lager: Brewed by
Guinness starting in 1960.
The harp is the national sym-
bol of Ireland, and this is their
lager. Crisper, cleaner and
lighter in body and style than
the stouts, it has a nice malt
and hop balance. A great lager
for someone who can't handle
the stout. $8.49/six-pack.
$1.11Porterhouse Beer:
Opened in 1989, as one of
the very few microbreweries
in Dublin. They make five or
six
different types of beer:
DRAUGHT
Stouts: Plain, Oyster,
Wrasslers.
Ales: Red, Brain Blasta,
TSB and Hop Head.
Lagers: Temple Brau,
Hersbrucker and Chiller.
The plain porter is not quite as
heavy as the stout so ifs more choco-
late, malt, caramel and not highly
hopped. $15.99/four-pack.
Murphy's Stout. Opened 1709 in
County Cork, Ireland. Labeled "the
official pint of us." White's favorite.
It's a little bit on the sweeter side than
Guinness. Also has a nitrogen widget
so it has the same head as Guinness.
Delicious. $6.99/four-pack.
