days for students to attend programs,
learn the facts and be inspired to
become future leaders. The kickoff
event was StandWithUs' Israeli Soldiers
Speak Out Tour sponsored by Hillel@
WMU and Outspoken (a LGBT student
organization). This event attracted more
than 70 students interested in learning
about Israel's democracy through dia-
logue with soldiers of the Israel Defense
Forces. The two soldiers spoke about
their experiences as well as gay rights
within the IDF and brought a human
face to a national army.
Students energized by the stories and
commitment of the soldiers braved the
cold weather to volunteer at the campus
flagpole passing out reading materials
and giveaways related to Israel. This was
a great opportunity to reach students
who would normally not attend our
programs.
Students seemed receptive to our
cause and were interested in getting
involved. Hillel hosted an Israel social
event called HeBREW night at a local
bar. Hillel members learned Hebrew
pickup lines and Israel trivia. Hillel's
Shabbat dinner consisted of traditional
Israeli food such as falafel, pita and
hummus, all catered by Kalamazoo
Chabad.
Israel Peace Week was a huge hit at
Western, and I look forward to next
year's activities. The WMU community
was welcoming to Israel Peace Week
and attended programs. The support
of the community is fundamental to
the success of our programs and cam-
paigns. Israel Peace Week was a big step
in the right direction for peace initia-
tives on campus.

about the power that is theirs by virtue
of their Facebook pages and other social
media. Students in Linda Baruch's Israel
Advocacy class have been assigned
projects using social media to share
facts about Israel and Israeli history
and Lazarus offered tactics for "talking
Israel" as he put it.
"There's no substitute for knowledge,'
he reminded them, "but ... the question
today is how do you get the message
across in an effective manner? Getting
the message across involves speaking
from the heart?'
