Riley will be the featured
speaker at the Detroit Jewish Coalition
for Literacy's (DJCL) spring work-
shop, "Literacy: Whatever it Takes:'
10 a.m.-noon Friday, March 23, at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Hills.

has waged a
10-year campaign
to improve adult
literacy, marshaling
thousands of vol-
unteers and tens of
thousands
of dollars
Rochelle Riley
to the cause. In 2003,
she received the
Scripps Howard Foundation's National
Journalism Award for Distinguished
Service to Literacy. She is honorary
co-chair of the Bookstock used book
and media sale, which raises money to
promote literacy.
At the workshop, Riley will inspire
new and veteran volunteers, sharing
her unique insights about the needs in
the community and her experiences as
a hands-on tutor and mentor.

Cupcake Shop Opens
In Downtown Detroit

Downtown Detroit will be a little
sweeter this month, as Just Baked
joins the growing number of compa-
nies calling the city home.
The specialty cupcake shop and
bakery recently moved into the Dime
Building, 719 Griswold. The 23-story
office building is owned by Rock
Ventures LLC, the umbrella entity
formed to provide operational coor-
dination, guidance, and integration

experience will follow. Margie Mellen, a
reading recovery specialist at Gretchko
Elementary School in West Bloomfield,
will facilitate a seminar on assisting
children who are learning the basics of
reading. Marcy Feldman, co-founder
and president of the Pasteur Alumni
Association, will discuss how seasoned
volunteers can expand a school literacy
program to the next level.
Founded and facilitated by the
Jewish Community Relations Council
(JCRC) and with generous support
from Repair the World, the DJCL
engages volunteers from local Jewish
organizations, benefitting kinder-
garten through third grade students
in schools in Detroit and Oakland
County through tutoring and enrich-
ment programs and book drives.
JCRC board members Ruth Grey and
Sue Birnholtz are co-chairs of the DJCL.

U-M Historian Gets
Jewish Book Award

University of Michigan historian
Deborah Dash Moore received the
National Jewish Book Award March
14 at the Center for Jewish History in
Manhattan.
Dash Moore, who is the Frederick
G.L. Huetwell Professor of History
and director of the Jean & Samuel
Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, is
co-editor with Marion Kaplan of the
book Gender and 1 Jewish History.
The book's topics include Jewish
women's creativity and spiritual-
ity, violence against women and
Jews' reactions to persecution in the
Holocaust.
