New headmaster charts fresh,
challenging educational
waters for Akiva.
Robert Sklar I Contributing Editor
y
eshivat Akiva's head of school says his role is
similar to that of a ship's
captain, mapping the
course and keeping the myriad of
personnel focused on the mission.
In Rabbi Tzvi Klugerman's case, the
ship's call is: "Akiva Is Serious About
Education."
Klugerman, his wife, Yaffa, and
their six children arrived at Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Southfield on
Aug. 1 from the Melvin J. Berman
Hebrew Academy in Rockville, Md., Rabbi Tzvi

cipal from 2000 to 2011. He brings
more than 20 years of experience
in education with a concentration on administration and
teacher training.
In his first eight months at Akiva, Klugerman has pushed
the faculty to think about what they are teaching and how it
relates to what students are learning.
"It is important to understand that what we teach and
what students learn are not always identical:' Klugerman
said.
