"Hair is everywhere — my comb, floor, drain, clothes ... is this normal?"
"I think I can actually see through my hair."
Suzanne Tedesco, a certified laser therapist, has been hearing these con-
cerns from men and women for 5 years when they first call or visit Michi-
gan Hair and Skin Center in Troy. Many are frustrated because they can diet
and exercise to help control their shape, and they can keep their smiles
healthy with regular dental care, but they feel a total loss of control over
their thinning hair."All of our clients have stopped losing hair and experi-
enced regrowth,"she says.
The Michigan Hair and Skin Center uses an FDA-approved system of
low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to reverse hair loss, and make thin weak hair
thicker and healthier. Most importantly, LLLT actually re-grows hair with-
out surgery, implants, drugs, or invasive practices.
LLLT is medically tested and proven to be safe and effective. A study
published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic
Dermatology showed a 93 percent increase in hair among the respon-
dents using the laser."Thinning hair occurs when the follicles are stran-
gled by excessive DHT (dihydrotestoserone),"Tedesco explains."The laser
breaks away the DHT, allowing the hair follicles to get the nutrients nec-
essary to re-grow hair."
In fact, she says,"Anyone who still has active hair follicles can benefit
from laser therapy. Even where hair isn't visible, active follicles may still be
present, making re-growth a possibility. Of course, follicles die after a few
years, so the sooner someone seeks treatment, the better."
LLLT isn't a fad or gimmick. It has been used in Europe for more than 20
years, and has been featured on Dateline, the ABC news, MSNBC, and in
Women's Health and Men's Health magazines. Recently, there was a laser
hair therapy segment on CBS-TV's The Doctors, and Barbara Walters of
The View called it a "hot new product."
The Michigan Hair and Skin Center in Troy uses Michigan's only pre-
mium LLLT machine. The machine's 451 lasers are housed in a salon hair
dryer-like cap, and they stimulate hair growth over the entire scalp."Simi-
lar to how sunlight stimulates the body to produce melanin, resulting in
a tan, the laser light stimulates the follicles to re-grow hair,"Tedesco says.
"It simply helps the body heal itself."

March 2012
`f you want a cookie, go to the
bakery. If you want a COOKIE, call
Stacy Carmen. The owner of Carmen
Cookies bakes them in multiple sizes,
unexpected shapes and in dessert-flavor
favorites. They are textured, stacked and
their colors highlight the unique specialty
creations.
Baking both for trays and party cater-
ing, Carmen's signature item is a tradi-
tional, chewy, chocolate chip cookie but
she also bakes oatmeal raisin cookies,
double-chocolate brownie cookies, rolled,
decorated sugar cookies, and something
she calls a "surprise-inside, melt-in-your-
mouth" cookie with a chocolate fudge
center and white exterior covered with
sprinkles. For those looking for a not-so-
sweet option, there is the biscotio, a mini
challah-like cookie.
And in the kitchen, it's just Carmen. "I
do all my own baking," she said. "I'm a
perfectionist when it comes to my baking.
I like things to look just right."
Sometimes, she designs products in
her sleep, waking up with a new idea.
"Some of my specialty creations include
a flower pot filled with mini garden shov-
els and flower stick cookies," Carmen
said. "I make teddy bear and balloon
cookies for new baby celebrations. For
someone with a new driver's license, I
make little car-shaped cookies and for
newlyweds: bride and groom cookies
dressed in wedding clothes, with hair
color to match the couples."
A longtime cook and baker, Carmen's
first big-time catered presentation was
for her son Ari's bar mitzvah open house
13 years-ago. "I did all the food," she
said of a meal that included eggplant
parmesan, lasagnas and cheese kugels.
"But my passion is for desserts. The party
theme was baseball so I made a round
baseball cake, a bat-shaped dessert and
sugar-cookie baseballs. I started baking
and cooking in the summer for the bar
mitzvah, which took place after Rosh
Hashanah. For months, I had stuff all over
the neighborhood in everybody's freezers."
Rice Krispie treat bun with brownie
hamburger and mustard- and ketchup-
colored frostings.
By the time her son was post-high
school and studying in Israel she was
deep into cookie-baking. "I sent him dif-
ferent creations made of cookies and his
friends started asking for more, calling
them "Carmen Cookies." And the fledgling
Southfield-based business took off.
Around that time, when Carmen's other
children were students at Akiva Hebrew
Day School in Southfield, she sold the
cookies as a fundraiser for the school.
"The first year, my daughter's class
made $4,000 toward their trip to Israel,"
she said. "Selling them there gave me
great exposure.
"And every year, for the welcome back
barbecue for the seniors at the Frankel
Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield, I
make an enormous Rice Krispie treat bun
with a brownie burger inside. I fill ketch-
up and mustard containers with yellow
and red frostings that can be squirted on
the dessert:'
Each Purim she highlights a different
creation to include in mishloach manot
(foods shared on the holiday) sent from
her family. "This year, I'm working on mini
cookie French fries with mustard- and
ketchup-colored frostings."
Her products are all nut free. They are
parve except for one daily item — which
is also the only creation that is not a
cookie. "I make an amazing cheese cake
from a family recipe given to me by my
aunt," she said.
Carmen maintains that no matter how
many cookies she bakes, she never gets
tired of them. "After all these years, I still
can't keep from eating them," she said.
