Hank Greenberg
golf tourney moves
to Franklin Hills.

Steve Stein

Contributing Writer

T

here's a new venue for the
Hank Greenberg Memorial
Golf Invitational.
After two years at Oakland Hills
Country Club, the invitational will be
held June 4 at Franklin Hills Country
Club in Farmington Hills for the first
time in its 22-year history.
Invitational organizers weren't unhap-
py with Oakland Hills in Bloomfield
Township. Far from it. A scheduling
problem caused the move.
"We found out last fall that we
would have had to move the invita-
tional to late July from our usual first
week of June date because of a tour-
nament being held at Oakland Hills,
and we didn't want to do that," said
David Blatt, executive director of the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation.
"For one thing, Steve Greenberg
(son of Hank Greenberg, the former
Detroit Tigers star) clears his schedule
to be here in early June for the invita-
tional:' Blatt said. "We were very happy
with Oakland Hills. We probably
would have gone back there if not for
the date situation."
Invitational organizers are also
happy to be at Franklin Hills, a pre-
dominantly Jewish club located on
Inkster Road north of 13 Mile.
The invitational was held at Tam-
0-Shanter Country Club in West
Bloomfield from its inception until
it moved to Oakland Hills in 2010 to
give golfers an opportunity to play the
famous South course.
Also this year, a new annual award
will be presented at the invitational.
Named in honor of the late Barry
Bremen, the award will go to someone
who has overcome challenges to be an
inspiration as did Adam Bremen, Barry
Bremen's son, who is wheelchair-bound.
Blatt said it was Barry Bremen who
introduced the late Dick Schapp to the
invitational, starting a long relation-
ship with the acclaimed sportswriter
that has continued with Dick's son
Jeremy Schapp, an ESPN reporter who
will be master of ceremonies in June.
Barry Bremen died June 30, 2011,
on his 64th birthday, of esophageal
cancer. The salesman and market-
ing executive was known across the
country during the 1980s as "the Great

Imposter" for his uncanny ability to
impersonate athletes, sports officials,
an Emmy Award accepter and even a
Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
For information on reservations and
sponsorships, contact Blatt at dblatt@
michiganjewishsports.org, (248) 592-
9393, visit the Michigan Jewish Sports
page on Facebook or go to the website
www.michiganjewishsports.org .
Proceeds will benefit the Karmanos
Cancer Institute's Lawrence and
Idell Weisberg Treatment Center in
Farmington Hills and children's charities.

Hall Nominations Needed
The Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation is also now accepting
nominations through March 16 for the
2012 induction class of the Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. There
are two categories for inductees: ath-
letes and non-athletes. For selection
criteria and a nomination form, go
to www.michiganjewishsports.org or
the Michigan Jewish Sports page on
Facebook.
The induction ceremony will be
held Oct. 22 at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield, where the
Hall of Fame is housed.
Founded in 1984, the Hall of Fame
includes prominent Michigan sports
figures such as Hank Greenberg, Detroit
Pistons owner Bill Davidson, tennis
champion Aaron Krickstein, boxing
manager Jackie Kallan and media per-
sonalities Mitch Albom and Don Shane.

High And Tight
Speaking of Hank Greenberg, he's
the subject of a new ebook High and
Tight: Hank Greenberg Confronts
Anti-Semitism in Baseball written
by acclaimed sports biographer Ray
Robinson to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Greenberg's birth.
The book is available through
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes and
Google Books. It's published by Now
and Then Reader, a digital publishing
house that focuses on short, historical-
based nonfiction books. The publish-
er's website is www.nowandthen.com.
Robinson wrote Iron Horse: Lou
Gehrig in His Time and biographies of
Knute Rockne, Will Rogers and Stan
Musial.
