"I still have a job waiting for me in Florida at Publix. I could have my toes in the ocean every day, but I've recon- nected and met too many people who mean too much to me now to leave." Case in point: Mittleman met Newman, his business partner, when they were 11. "We were in the chess club at the Oak Park Community Center:' So it seemed the perfect time to put his plan into action. Doing odd jobs and volunteering for various organiza- tions, including coaching teens par- ticipating in the JCC Maccabi games, Mittleman has seen the need for a service that will allow clients to send a trusted party to hand-pick groceries at the store of their choice and deliver to their home, from homebound senior citizens to busy working moms with little time to shop to cancer patients whose out-of-town families have hired him to help through his partnership with the American Cancer Society. "The community here is so tight, and they take care of you. I want to do what I can to give back': he says. Groceries2you, which he hopes to grow to four employees by year's end, differs from other large-scale grocery- delivery competitors in other cities — like Peapod in Chicago and Fresh Direct in New York City — in that the big firms shop their own warehouses. Mittleman offers a different perspec- tive to clients: The customers call or email their grocery list and tell him specifically which store they want him to shop, from Meijer to Kroger to Costco, in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Ingham counties, where he gladly goes with his eco- friendly denim shopping bag that each new customer receives. The basic shopping and deliv- ery charge is $19.95 for up to $150 of items from one store. Up to six items from a second store cost $5.95. Express delivery of up to 10 items from one store is $11.95. "We're a green company:' he says. He goes over the list with the client, checks brands and backup options: "I've even called customers from a store to say they're out of a certain brand, or that the market's tuna is expiring in two weeks instead of two years and to tell them the steaks at their store of choice don't look good today," says Mittleman. "What I offer is superb customer service, so that they get their money's worth from me and their groceries. It's extremely personalized. I know how to take care of people, I've won customer-service awards, and I love to do it, and my service actually saves people money because it cuts down on impulse shopping." Plus, he adds, "No one knows how to pick out a steak like I do:' Contact Groceries2you at groceries2u.com or call (248) 520- 9900 or (239) 404-6950. ❑ 92 VADVAKICE Plumbing Supply Company COME VISIT OUR OUTSTANDING SHOWROOM 1977 E.
