Martin, then-Detroit Chapter president,
who affixed a mezuzah with Detroiter
Betty Bienstock, a national board
member.
Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem
opened in 1961 at the request of the
Israeli government to fill the void of the
closed Mount Scopus hospital. Detroit
Hadassah was well represented at cer-
emonies dedicating the Mother and
Child Pavilion, Emergency Medicine
and other key departments during the
years and continues to take an active
interest in its growth.

Community Service
About 30 years ago, when Russian
immigrants were settling in Oak Park,
the Greater Detroit Chapter became
more involved within the local com-
munity. A tutoring program ensued
that helped Russian students with their
daily schoolwork. Today, Hadassah's
Read*Write*Now! Program has more
than 50 tutor-volunteers who are wel-
comed into local elementary schools
throughout Oakland County.
Many other community service pro-
grams have become widely recognized
in the area. Hadassah's Doll Project has
created more than 65,000 soft cloth
dolls that have been distributed to chil-
dren in local hospitals and Hadassah
hospitals in Israel. The dolls serve as a
source of comfort as well as a tool for
hospital doctors and nurses to explain
medical procedures to young patients.
GirlForce promotes increased self-
esteem and positive body image to
young women, ages 10-14. Check It
Out, in collaboration with William
Beaumont Hospital, educates girls in
grades 11-12 about breast self-exams.
Hadassah volunteers continue to
hand-knit hats and lap pads for cancer
patients, underprivileged children and
the elderly throughout the community.

Detroit Marks Centennial
Throughout the year, Hadassah will
have many programs and activities
celebrating its centennial. On March
22, Hadassah chapters coast-to-coast
will launch the centennial celebration
with open houses dubbed "Home Sweet
Hadassah:' The Greater Detroit Chapter
will celebrate at the Sarah and Ralph
Davidson Hadassah House in West
Bloomfield.

On Sunday, April 29, Greater Detroit
Chapter will be sponsoring the film,
Love Etc., at the Lenore Marwil Jewish
Film Festival, with a reception prior to
the movie.
A Family Fun Day will be held
during the summer at the Davidson
Hadassah House for the community.
Finally, Greater Detroit.will hold its
annual Opening Meeting on Tuesday,
Sept. 11, at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield. This year's event
will showcase the rich history of
Hadassah.
"I am proud to be associated with
Henrietta Szold's dream of healing
and welfare that became the Hadassah
organization, with an infrastructure of
hospitals and schools in Israel and car-
ing for people around the world:' said
Joan Epstein, president, Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah. "Our future
depends on each and every member
recognizing that they can and do make
a difference'

Centennial Convention
Hadassah's Centennial Convention
will be held in Jerusalem from Oct.
15-18. One of the highlights will be
the dedication and tour of the Sarah
Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower at
Ein Kerem.
The building of this facility was
made possible by the unprecedented
gift of $75 million from William and
Karen Davidson on behalf of Guardian
Industries Corp. to honor the memory
of Davidson's mother. It represents the
future of medicine for the Hadassah
Medical Organization.
The 19 story tower, a cutting-edge,
energy-efficient 500-bed inpatient facil-
ity, integrates Hadassah's dedication to
healing with science's most sophisticat-
ed developing medical technologies. The
opportunity for research will be greatly
improved as well. It is expected to start
treating patients this month.
"It's my hope,' the late William
Davidson had said, "that the Sarah
Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower
will stand as an enduring tribute to my
mother's love of Hadassah, Israel and
the Jewish people." ❑
