maiden, is chosen to replace Vashti and
ends up using her influence on the king
to halt the destruction of the Jewish
people.
Shaarey Zedek's annual Vashti's
Banquet commemorates the king's feisty
first wife's banquet for women in long-
ago Persia.
"Wild dancing, (henna) tattooing, good
food and friends — who could pass that
up?" said Susie Citrin of Birmingham,
who was invited to Vashti's Banquet by
her friend, Marcy Feldman.
Feldman, a jewelry designer and life-
time Shaarey Zedek sisterhood member,
donated the glimmering fabrics used
throughout the room as overhead sashes,
tent drapes and lavish table coverings
recalling a Persian palace.
Most of the fabrics, woven through
with sparkly threads, were left over from
her children's b'nai mitzvot or other fam-
ily parties.
"I love glitz, and I love silver:' said
Feldman, who also owns Heartwear
Designs jewelry in Birmingham, as she

pointed out the centerpieces comprised
of sterling silver items donated by mem-
bers of the congregation sisterhood over
the years.
The Persian Rose cocktails created by
amateur mixologist and Shaarey Zedek
sisterhood member Mary Knoll were a
big hit. Knoll created the Persian-inspired
cocktail for a previous Vashti's Banquet,
and its popularity prompted her to bring
the recipe back this year. The drink,
which includes rosewater, Cointreau and
either vodka or tequila, was adapted to
accommodate individual tastes as well as
the laws of Kashrut.
The idea of expanding Vashti's Banquet
to include women beyond the Shaarey
Zedek community began with the first
banquet three years ago.
Attending the annual event for the
third time, Jeri Fishman, Southfield resi-
dent and former sisterhood president,
said the organization wanted to bridge
the gap between women from every
temple, synagogue and sisterhood.
"I applaud that, and I appreciate it,"

said Roseanne Simons of Southfield, a
member of the Birmingham Temple in
Farmington Hills. "I met so many people
here that I might not have gotten to know
otherwise."

A Women's World
Co-chairs of this year's banquet were Suzi
Terebelo of Southfield and Wendy Arnold
of Farmington Hills.
"The thing I love the best is the exten-
sive array of involvement of the other
synagogues:' said Terebelo. "We hope
to make this as an annual event and to
broaden participation even further with-
in the community."
Guests included women with a wide
range of affiliations beyond Shaarey
Zedek. One woman read the positive
comments about last year's event on
Facebook and decided to attend this year
along with a group of friends, includ-
ing Huntington Woods residents Judy
Goldsmith and Judge Michelle Appel of
the Woodward Shul in Royal Oak.
"It's a great celebration of a festival

that is a return to Judaism:' said Appel.
This was the third banquet for profes-
sional belly dancer and instructor Lana
Mini of St. Claire Shores, who enjoyed
teaching the women some basic moves.
"These are such open-minded and
worldly women:' Mini said. "I'm at doz-
ens of events all over, and I lovethese
women, they're so warm and kind."
One of the more active belly danc-
ers was Elayne Gross of Oak Park, who
heard about the event from a friend.
Sue Oleinick of Farmington Hills, who
attended for the first time, said she
learned some "new moves."
A Middle Eastern feast provided by
Quality Kosher Catering included tra-
ditional favorites such as hummous,
tabbouli, fattoush, falafel and pita, in
addition to Persian chicken topped with
curry sauce. Guests enjoyed a dessert
table laden with homemade baklava and
an array of fresh and dried fruits.
"It was a lovely evening with lovely old
and new friends:' said Ellen Bouchard of
West Bloomfield. E
