Elizabeth Applebaum I Special to the Jewish News I n the 1960s, you couldn't get any cooler than the Shy Guys. Man, these cats were happen- ing! The Shy Guys -- all students at Oak Park High School — had big hair kept in place with plenty of product. They wore white shirts underneath black, V-neck sweaters. Smooth. In May 1966, the Shy Guys released their one hit, "We Gotta Go:' on the Panik label. It was a catchy tune — the kind of song some kid on American Bandstand would invariably describe as having "a good beat." It included a guitar solo (a little wild, just to let you know these guys were ready for anything!) and one long "Yeaaaaaahhh!" amid lyrics like "Their lives are dull / Don't have no fun / no matter what they do:' Among those inspired was fellow student Don Fagenson — today known as Don Was. Approximately 70 women from synagogues, sisterhoods and com- munities throughout Metro Detroit gathered to enjoy an evening of pre-Purim fun and friendship amid a backdrop of food, decor and entertainment from ancient Middle Eastern traditions. The event was named in honor of Queen Vashti, a char- acter in the Book of Esther, which is read on Purim (this year on March 8). The story says that Vashti, the first wife of Persian King Ahasuerus, was banished after refusing to leave the women's banquet she was hosting to dance naked before the king and his royal guests.
