spirituality Celebrating Peace Jewish Detroiters participate in Interfaith World Sabbath. 1- T he 13th Annual World Sabbath took place at Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit and its mission was to teach Metro Detroit's diverse population that the work of building a community of justice, equality, respect and peace is a calling we all share, no matter what our faith tradition might be. The Rev. Ken Flowers, who has been very active in interfaith initiatives and is a member of the Interfaith Leadership Council, welcomed this event with open arms at his church. Greater New Mount Moriah was the perfect spot for an interfaith event as it stands on the same location where Orthodox Congregation Beth Moses once stood. Noam Kimelinan, who lives in Detroit and is an active member of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, kicked off the World Sabbath service with the blowing of the shofar. This was followed by a Muslim youth from the Muslim Center of Detroit chanting the Muslim Call to Prayer. Prayers for Peace in many faith traditions (Sikh, Buddhist, Baha'i, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Native American and Quaker) were interspersed throughout the service and were given by youth of various ages. The World Sabbath on Jan. 29 also featured mime, traditional Aztec, Hindu and Jain dances performed by children, teenagers and young adults. Maggid (Jewish preacher) Steve Klaper and Brother Al Mascia were honored this year for their work at the Song and Spirit Institute for Peace in Berkley, which promotes greater understanding among people of diverse religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds through music, art, cultural programs, dia- logue and study. Gail Katz, a co-founder of WISDOM (Women's Interfaith Solutions for Dialogue and Outreach in Metro Detroit), was chair of the World Sabbath. ❑ The highlight of the World Sabbath every year is the "Children of Peace," who wave banners they created that will become an interfaith peace quilt. Tiffany Green, cantorial soloist of Temple Kol Ami, and Anna Brooks, a teen songwriter and singer affiliated with Temple Israel, sing a prayer for peace together.
