C

ongregation Shaarey Zedek presented a program on Jews and jewelry in late
January at Heartwear Designs in Birmingham. The gallery, owned by Shaarey
Zedek member Marcy Feldman, carries her creations in gold, platinum and
gemstones as well as other jewelry and glass pieces.
During the event, Feldman led a discussion of the historical connections between
Judaism, gems and jewelry.

She also provided insight about how she creates jewelry, from drawing to finished
piece, as well as insight into jewelry production and sales techniques. Ten percent of
all purchases made at the event were donated to benefit future Shaarey Zedek pro-
gramming.

M

ore than 50 mothers and daughters enjoyed a day
of pampering at Spa Shalom on Feb. 12.
Congregation Beth Shalom of Oak Park hosted
the free event for mothers and daughters in the commu-
nity as a fun way to introduce them to the congregation.
"We're so happy with the turnout today," said event chair
Nancy Goldstein, president of the Beth Shalom religious
school board. "We all had such a good time. It was an event
where mothers could spend some one-on-one time with

their daughters. One child said to me, 'This is the best day
of my life, so I guess I'd say the event was a success."
Activities for the day included yoga (using positions that
mimicked characters of the Hebrew alphabet), mother-
daughter manicures and delicious smoothies at snack
time. Daughters also enjoyed creating their own duct-tape
flip flops at the event.
It was so great seeing all of the positive energy in the
room at Spa Shalom," said Beth Shalom President Mandy
Garver. "There were so many happy kids and moms. While
this was our first Spa Shalom, it won't be our last!" ❑
