Sue Pearl Special to the Jewish News T he Jewish Community Center's Randleman Hall in West Bloomfield was all decked out for a 90th birthday party Sunday, Feb. 24, to honor local fit- ness guru, Sylvia Zukin. More than 190 guests came to the party, hosted by the Jewish Community Center and the Women's Health Club. The guests included family mem- bers, lifelong friends, students and co-workers. Sylvia's three children, their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren were on hand, some from as far away as New York, Florida, Washington, D.C., Illinois, Iowa, Colorado and Israel. In 1956, Sylvia began working as an exercise instructor for the JCC at its original location on Woodward Avenue. She moved with the Center to its Dexter-Davison location and then on to the Curtis location where she became the director of Women's Health. "At the time, I was the only woman in a man's world;' she said. When the JCC opened in West Bloomfield in 1975, Sylvia also worked there as the director of the Women's Health Club, until 15 years ago. She was instrumental in bringing Sylvia Zukin and Carol Eisenshtadt at the 90th birthday celebration yoga, pilates, Feldenkrais and many other cutting-edge ideas to the Center. She still teaches hydro-tone and body-awareness exercise classes an hour a day Monday-Friday. Carol Eisenshtadt, a member of the JCC who was instrumental in plan- ning the party, said, "Sylvia makes each and every one of us feel special and wonderful because she takes a special interest in each person." Sylvia was presented with a plaque from the JCC in recognition for her life-long commitment and listened as everyone sang a rousing tribute to her life with a song crafted by Eisenshtadt to the tune of the old hit, "Marne:' After thanking everyone for corn- ing, Sylvia told her guests, "I only wish that you all have a blessed life like I have."
