"A couple of employees asked if I would do a contest or give some incentive for a weight-loss pro- gram for our employees',' said co-owner Henry Abrams. "I discussed doing this with my General Manager Lee Weinstein, and he took the ball and ran with it. "When you're healthy, you're happier, and that spills over to our customers and has created a happier work environment for everyone,' said Abrams, who belongs to Temple Israel, along with Weinstein and co-owner Fred LaBelle. Abrams also belongs to Temple Beth El, where he says his family goes back 120 years. The contest will run for eight weeks and winners will be deter- mined by the total body weight percentage lost. Abrams offered to provide $500 for first place and $250 for second place. Everyone who par- ticipates and weighs in weekly is a winner because they will receive $1 for each pound lost. Nineteen out of 49 employees enrolled and had their first official weigh-in on Feb. 2. The group col- lectively weighed 4,260.9 pounds. Employees set individual weight-loss goals, which together totaled 401 pounds (almost 10 percent). The company created a short- term paid internship for a current health/nutrition student to oversee the contest, conduct unbiased confi- dential weigh-ins and provide ideas for healthier eating and safe weight loss. The positive energy was evident as each employee weighed in and received a personal progress report. Healthy snacks provided by the owners contributed to the encourag- ing atmosphere. Employees scrambled to see their individual rankings when the group results were posted. To protect pri- vacy, individual weights will not be publicized.
