A girls softball team. Athletic Director Alan Ramsden has added girls softball to the list of academy sports, and he's the team's coach. The team will play a Catholic League junior varsity schedule this spring with hopes of moving up to varsity next year. Girls softball has replaced girls golf. Even though the academy had a girls golf team for a few years, it never com- peted. "So we'll shut it down for now," Ramsden said."I'm excited about our softball program because there's a lot of interest in playing. Twenty-four girls came out for the team:' Four freshmen, eight sophomores, 10 juniors and two seniors want to play softball. Unfortunately, not all will be on the team. "I'm going to have a big roster, but it won't be 24',' said Ramsden, who will be coaching softball for the first time. The team can start practicing March 12, and it will open the season at 4 p.m. April 4 at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. After a break for Passover, its first home game will be at 4 p.m. April 17 vs. Waterford Our Lady at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield. Home games also will be played at the Community Sports Park on Keith Road in West Bloomfield. During the fall, Frankel has boys soccer and tennis, boys and girls cross country, and girls volleyball teams. Winter sports are boys and girls basket- ball and boys and girls bowling. Spring now has boys golf and baseball, and girls softball, soccer and tennis. Ramsden said two girls plan to try out for the boys golf team now that the girls golf team has disbanded. Boys basketball is the most popular sport at the academy. This winter, 41 of the school's 105 boys are playing on the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.
