F ollowing several months of discussion, an agreement to join resources has been signed between JVS and ORT America Inc. that will transfer the David B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center (Hermelin ORT) under the administration of JVS. The center is in the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The two organizations have worked together for 10 years, with Hermelin ORT providing needed Microsoft Office computer train- ing and JVS' Career Development and Employment Services providing employ- ment readiness and support services. The ORT Resource Center is now a division of JVS and JVS is licensed by ORT to implement its programs and services. "The agreement is a natural step that formalizes the synergy between JVS and Hermelin ORT and serves to strengthen both',' said JVS President and CEO Barbara Nurenberg, "It has always been both organizations' goal to empower individuals with the skills needed to attain economic self-sufficiency with a sense of independence and dignity. Hermelin ORT offers outstanding corn- puter skills training and website devel- opment instruction. "This meshes perfectly with JVS' mission to provide counseling, training and support services to help people help themselves. Without computer skills, it is nearly impossible to compete in the job market. JVS began an even greater collaboration with Hermelin ORT three years ago to launch Springboard to Success, which is funded through a grant from the Jewish Women's Foundation. It has yielded great success, with 85 per- cent of participants finding employment and the others go on to more training or higher education. Nicole Miller, regional director of ORT America, calls the partnership a win-win. "Here locally, we are excited about the partnership between Hermelin ORT and JVS and can't wait to see the pro- grams grow',' she said. "We know that with their resources and management, Hermelin ORT will be able to offer more valuable job training programs to more of Michigan's unem- ployed and under- employed!' Kevin Cohen Hermelin ORT offers many services to the community for a fee, including film, video and audio transfers, website development, private instruction, social media consultation and instruction and video production and editing. Kevin Cohen, who has an extensive background in information technology, is the program director. For information, call (248) 432 - 5411. EMU Jewish Studies Hosts Sen.
