Susan Wi lson /Doc Emet Pro duct ions frontlines Call To Action Movie documents rising tides of anti-Jewish fervor worldwide. Don Cohen Contributing Writer B oston-area filmmaker and Jewish activist/educator Gloria Greenfield can play both defense and offense. Speaking on Feb. 6 to the more than 400 people who had just viewed Unmasked Judeophobia — The Threat To Civilization at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, she said her 2008 film, The Case for Israe• Democracy's Outpost, played defense while this new film from her Doc Emet Productions is playing offense. "I'm concerned about existential issues here she said. "We are not facing being barred from country clubs; there is a lethal anti-Semitism, and there are state-sanctioned calls for killing Jews wherever they can be found and for destroying Israel as a Jewish homeland. We must open our eyes and recognize what is happening around the world; it will happen here if we fail to act." Judeophobia, the hatred of Jews, is more commonly known as anti-Semitism. The film, which begins by exploring Christian anti-Semitism, methodically moves through Nazi Germany and its support from the (Muslim) Mufti of Jerusalem, to the Muslim Brotherhood, the historic forgery The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, to modern-day Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas and anti-Jewish and anti-Israel activity in Europe and on North American college campuses. The history lesson and analysis of current events is presented as a call to action. "The primary perpetrator and spreader of lethal anti- Semitism around the world is the radical Islamic movement': Greenfield says, having made the case at length in her film. "It is not Islamophobia to say that. Until we say it we will not be able to have an impact. Instead of just waiting to hear them out, we need to stand up together and take actions:' Given Jewish history, "if we want to look at the Jewish community we're going to see a lot of pathology because we are a damaged people': she said, "but if we focus on hostilities [in our Jewish community], we miss the major issue:' Greenfield strongly endorsed the efforts of the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA) led by Irwin Cotler, a Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) and prominent human rights and Israel activist, and English MP John Mann. ICCA brings together more than 250 parliamentarians from 46 countries to fight against resurgent global anti-Sem- itism (www.antisem.org ). She pointed to its resolution against anti-Semitism, the Ottawa Protocol, that was recently signed by the Canadian government, saying it was unique and stronger than anything the United States has signed. "We must have strong defenders and producer- director Gloria Z. Greenfield stop appeasing tyrants': Greenfield said. "We can't expect our children to stand up and fight unless they see us standing up in our communities." Unmasked Judeophobia is being trans- lated into seven languages for broadcast in Spain, Latin America, the Middle East "and, hopefully, in this country as well;' Greenfield said. David Victor of West Bloomfield, who directs the International Business Program at Eastern Michigan University, found the film impressive. "It makes a strong case that the strength of the opposition to the State of Israel and the threat to Jews is not simply because of Jewish support for Israel," he said. The program was the first of a three-part series presented by the Zionist Organization of America- Michigan Region. Co-sponsors were the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, StandWithUs Michigan and the B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region, with support from 17 area synagogues and community groups.
