switch from singles to pairs
competition three years ago
seems to be paying off for fig-
ure skater Jeffrey Fishman.
The 16-year-old from Wixom won a
silver medal in intermediate pairs with
partner Sophia Dai at the Junior National
Championships held in Lansing.
Jeffrey and Sophia skate out of the
Arctic Figure Skating Club at the Arctic
Edge in Canton. Sophia lives in Canton
and is 12 years old. It's not unusual for
the female in a youth pairs team to be
younger than the male.
"It's easier for the male to do lifts when
the female is smaller than he is:' said
Jeffrey, who is a junior at Walled Lake
Western High School.
Making the transition from singles to
pairs isn't easy, according to Jeffrey.
"You have to learn to trust your part-
ner," he said. "And when you compete
in singles, you can improvise if things
aren't going well. You can't do that in pairs
— unless you have something planned
— because you have to be considerate of
your partner."
Jeffrey and Sophia practice five to six
days a week, and do off-ice training two
or three days a week. The Junior National
Championships silver medal is their big-
gest accomplishment.

9-pins in the other seven frames, and he
picked up all the spares.
The final 7-pin came in the first frame
of the third game. He threw 11 consecu-
tive strikes to end his night.
"After I threw a triple (following the
last 7-pin), I thought I had a chance for
an 800. Right place, right time said

changing lane conditions.
Fishman held the previous
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson record for
a series. He bowled 300-246-265-811
on Nov. 28, 2005, also at Country Lanes.
He now has four 800 series and two
300 games in his career. He's averaging
218 this season in the Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson League.

She's A Poker Champ
A woman captured the championship
of the Pisgah/Zeiger and Bloch/Israel
Texas Hold'em Tournament for only the
second time in the seven-year history of
the poker competition.
Randi Schaefer won the title Jan. 29
at the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield in the 12th tournament
hosted by the lodges to raise money for
B'nai B'rith sports programs.
The first female champ was Andrea
Korotkin Belen. She won Sept. 25, 2005,
at the Peking House restaurant in Royal
Oak. It was the last tournament held
away from the JCC.
