POP / ROCK
JAZZ / FOLK
Jewish singer-songwriter Jill Sobule
has dealt with topics like the death
penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, repro-
duction, adolescence, the Christian
right — and kissing a girl. Her 1995
song "I Kissed a Girl" (long before
Katy Perry had the idea for a song
of the same title) was a story-song
about a lesbian flirtation between two
suburban girlfriends that became a
huge hit. Her often-satirical songs are
sometimes plotted through the eyes
of women in the news or
her own fictional female
creations. Hear Sobule
(and new songs off her
recently released and
upcoming albums) at 8
p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at
the Ark. 316. S. Main, Ann
Arbor. $15. (734) 761-
1451; theark.org .
