metro Young Leaders To Guide The Detroit Jewish News Foundation Board of Directors will bring our community's history to life. Jackie Headapohl I Managing Editor T welve young Jewish leaders in Metro Detroit will help guide the 15-member Detroit Jewish News Foundation (DJNF) on its mission to digitize and make searchable 70 years of Jewish News archives as well as bring all that history to life. "I wanted to assemble a group of some of our best and brightest emerging lead- ers," said Arthur Horwitz, founder and president of the Foundation. "As these leaders direct the Foundation and its proj- ects, they will also benefit from a better understanding of our community's history and use that knowledge to help navigate our future as a Jewish community in Southeastern Michigan:' The Foundation's first priority will be to bring the Jewish News archives, currently on microfiche, into the 21st century in a digitized and searchable format that will be accessible to the public. "As a journalist, I have deep appre- ciation for history and the amazing stories and lessons we can learn from our past;' said Robin Schwartz, DJNF director, Fox 2 News anchor and JN correspondent. "It's an honor to be part of this group and I'm anx- ious to see where our efforts may lead:' Aside from digitizing the IN, those efforts could lead to many interesting and educational programs for the community, Horwitz said. "The board of directors will also be involved in finding new and innova- tive ways to bring our history to life to edu- cate and inform our community, including seminars and town hall-style gatherings:' "I'm thrilled and honored to serve on the Detroit Jewish News Foundation board of directors:' said Lena Epstein Koretzky, DJNF director and general manger at Southfield-based Vesco Oil Corporation. "I look forward to preserving and sharing the history of Detroit's Jewish commu- nity. So much can be learned from those who walked before us:' Board member Daniel Cherrin added, "As an involved member of the DJNF, I hope we can build upon that legacy in a meaningful way, while making our own mark on the next generation. At the same time, I am looking forward to sharing in that experience with my own children and creating new memories for them to carry in the decades to come, building a more vibrant and enriched Jewish com- munity in and around Detroit." And so much can be learned from each other, added Horwitz, who said he looked forward to getting these leaders around the table not only to move the Detroit Jewish News Foundation toward its goal, "but also so they can learn from and help each other in their individual and collective roles and responsibilities and aspirations for their community:' The 12 directors join the Foundation's founding directors, Arthur Horwitz, presi- dent of Renaissance Media and publisher/ executive editor of the Jewish News; Kevin Browett, COO of Renaissance Media and the Jewish News; and Donald Lifton, a business executive and attorney who is a director of Renaissance Media. The Foundation previously announced its honorary board of directors, chaired by Eugene Applebaum, Mandell L. "Bill" Berman, Judge Avern Cohn and A. Alfred Taubman, and comprising a veritable who's who of Jewish leaders and philan- thropists who share the goal of ensuring that the history of Metro Detroit's Jewish community is preserved and shared with generations to come. The first meeting of the Foundation board is being planned for this spring. ❑ Detroit Jewish News . Foundation Board of Directors _ ,' _. ..,.
