Sinai Guild Continues Sinai Hospital Legacy I read with interest the story about the Jewish Fund and was surprised to read that they are the only legacy of Sinai Hospital ("A Legacy Of Support," Jan. 12, page 8). The Sinai Guild, which was founded prior to the opening of the hospital, is now in its 60th year of serving our com- munity. It's now 12 years since the Sinai Guild determined to continue our excel- lent work outside of brick and mortar by becoming a fundraising, grant-giv- ing organization. Since 2001, the Sinai Guild has given more than $3.5 million to our commu- nity in grants for medical research and medical equipment. We are very proud of our Sinai Hospital legacy. Rusty Rosman, president The Sinai Guild Domestic Abuse Knows No Societal Boundaries Regarding "Domestic Violence" (Jan. 19, page 1), thank you Cantor Leonard Gutman for having the strength and courage to describe the domestic abuse that affected you and your family. In our society, we tend to put our heads in the sand when it comes to domestic abuse. The article about the cantor's sister's death has shone a light on how domestic abuse is an important topic even for those in the Jewish com- munity. Domestic abuse has no boundar- ies; it affects wealthy, middle class, lower income, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, men and women. It destroys families in many different ways. It's never easy to talk about a death of a loved one. Cantor Gutman has showed us that we cannot forget the concept of tikkun olam [repair of the world] and the importance of taking responsibil- ity to care for each other. If his story reaches only one person, then it has more than served its purpose. Laurence Kirshner Farmington Hills Palestinian Mufti Exposed: Peace With Murderers? How many Jews were shocked to read the words of the Palestinian Authority's "most esteemed religious authority" in the Jewish News ("Mufti's Hate Call Taints Bid To Find Real Peace:' Jan. 26, page 31)? Where was the outrage when the cleric appointed by P.A. President and Fatah Chairman Mahmoud Abbas declared the destiny of the Muslims was to kill Jews? It is stunning that leaders of the Palestinians openly declare their poi- sonous beliefs. The "moderator" of the event even referred to the battle with Jews as "war with the descen- dants of the apes and the pigs:' clearly acknowledging what many of us believe, that killing Jews is central to the Palestinians' religious teachings. None of this stopped past President Jimmy Carter, on the back page of Time magazine (Jan. 30, page 64,) from say- ing,"We [the U.S.] are completely in bed with the Israelis, who are persecut- ing the Palestinians horribly, and this is contrary, I think, to the best interest of Israel:' Carter also said about Iran, "If they are lying [about manufacturing nuclear weapons], then I don't see that as a major catastrophe because they'll only have one or two military weapons. Israel probably has 300 or so." Carter and so many others have few Arnie Goldman Israel Is A Great Source Of Pride I was disappointed to read the letter "Sadly, It's Not The Same Israel That I Remember," (Jan.19, page 5). As to Israel becoming intolerant, Israel is the only nation in the history to move 1.2 million people to freedom. Israel is the only country in history where white or Asians or Hispanics moved black people to freedom. Israel has been voted the most friendly nation in the world to gays and lesbians. Israel is the most demo- cratic nation on the planet. Israel has hundreds of thousands of wonderful young men and beautiful young women in the IDF defending not only Israel, but by extension, Jews every- where. Israel has easily demonstrated more achievements in science, medicine and entrepreneurial development per capita than any country during the last 100 years. Israel is coming closer to treat- ments and cures for cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Israel welcomes any Jew from any- where in the world. Without Israel, we could suffer severe anti-Semitism in any country. What if Israel had existed in 1933-1945? Yes, Israel has flaws, but we must always show great pride for Israel. Harvey S. Bronstein Southfield Tu B'Shevat Correction In the story "Feeling Romantic? Bestow One-of-a-Kind Jewels" (Red Thread magazine, February, page 12), the photo of the earrings from Diane Harris' Birmingham store, My House of Style, was correct, but the other two photos were placed in error. Above is a correct photo of Harris' shop. They want peace and freedom for Palestinians but don't fear Jews being targeted for death by those same Palestinians.
