he Janice Charach Gallery at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield was the site Jan. 22 of
the opening of "Project Runway: Detroit:'
an exhibit of high couture by local fashion
designers and more than 400 bracelets deco-
rated by artists throughout the world that runs
through March 8. All are for sale.
The highlight was a runway show featuring
dresses designed by a select group of 11 teen
girls from Detroit and the suburbs. The teens
spent three months working with Detroit
artist and former model Dana Keaton, who
taught them to sew, create and design pieces
that were worn on the runway by professional
models at the opening. They had $500 to buy
all materials for the group.

"The girls bonded immediately; they
all were very outgoing and really friendly:'
said Terri Stearn, gallery director. "Dana
was nothing short of amazing. These girls
respected her like nothing I have seen."
After the teens' fashions came new gowns
and outfits by leading fashion designers,
including Joe Faris of Bravo TV's Project
Runway fame. The afternoon also fea-
tured an MC and music from Joe Cornell
Entertainment.
Participants included Jesse Adler, Atiyah
Anderson, Talya Applebaum, Kiara Hill, Ciara
Morris, Halley Rosenberg, Rebecca Traison,
Danielle Schostak, Lexi Smith, Diamond
Shockley and Zoe Yedwab.
"We are trying to find a donor for this
project so we can do it again next year:'
Steam said. "People are already calling to ask
when the next class starts." ❑
