ated Central High School, studied accounting at Wayne State University and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Randy Slomovitz of San Diego, Calif., recalled his father's devo- tion to his developmentally disabled brother, Gabriel. "My father spoke of the trauma he felt when his young brother was institutionalized," said Randy. "Eventually, the pain led to my grandparents and my father playing an instrumental role in founding JARC [an agency that provides group-home residential care for the developmen- tally disabled]. "My dad wanted to be an accoun- tant," said Randy, "but he was called by his father to work at the Jewish News and eventually left school in order to help build the business. And he was instrumental in building the business." Carmi's wife, Sharron, was part of the IN operation, assisting at the office, remembers Dharlene Norris, a current JN sales representative and Carmi's administrative assistant for eight years. "Carmi was a devoted husband, father, son and brother," remembers Norris. Carmi lost Sharron to cancer in 2001. He wed Miriam Goldberg in 2004. "My father was a prototypical 1950s man," said Randy. "He was stern on the outside, but inside was very soft — and he tried to help people in many ways." Carmi's volunteer involvement accentuated his devotion to the Detroit Jewish community. He was president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit and the Jewish National Fund Council of Metropolitan Detroit. He served on the boards of the Detroit Chapter of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Centennial Lodge B'nai B'rith, City of Hope, Hillel Day School Governor's Development Fund and numerous other worthy causes. He was an adjutant in the Bale Post of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) and received awards from the Allied Jewish Campaign, what is now the American Friends of Magen David Adom, the JWV Department of Michigan and many others. Charlotte Dubin, Jewish News city editor from 1964-1974, said, "Carmi was very supportive of everything his father did with the paper. "It was such a wonderful experi- ence to work with a family like this. It wasn't just a paper, it was a whole family operation. And I mean 'family' in the larger sense, too, with the staff' said Dubin. "With Carmi's passing, another piece of the community's history also passes on:' said IN publisher Horwitz. "But what Carmi's father said about him being a good son is something that I'm sure Carmi's family continues to embrace. "We extend our sincere condolences to Carmi's family from the Jewish News."
