Suzanne Chessler Contributing Writer A manda Morgan, a 17-year- old singer-guitarist- songwriter, is learning the importance of enduring fans. From a distance, their votes have brought special recognition for her recordings played on indie radio sta- tion WDVD (96.3 FM), ranking her original songs as the most requested among a group of selections intro- duced. In "The Radio Cafe" polls, her most recent winner, "Just Wanna Know Why," topped the charts for four straight weeks. Up close, fans who saw Amanda on a local TV morning show arrived early for her first big concert. They wanted to say hello and get front seats before her performance at last September's Arts, Beats & Eats festival in Royal Oak. The emerging entertainer hopes to become known by even more listen- ers this month and next as her song "Ten Steps Back" is featured on Delta Airlines' in-flight music channel, which potentially can reach more than 3 million listeners. Amanda, who periodically appears at AJ's Music Cafe in Ferndale and the Plymouth Coffee Bean Company, is the one who packages and mails out fan T-shirts when orders are placed at her website, www.amandamorganmusic. corn. "Most of my songs are about other people and their relationships, and I pour my heart and soul into them:' says Amanda, a Roeper School senior who describes her style as a combina- tion of pop, country and rock. "My listening tastes are very eclectic, and I enjoy all kinds of music." Amanda has liked performing since taking the stage as a 4-year-old in a preschool show at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, then later with a group in West Bloomfield. She began playing piano while in first grade and taught herself guitar the year of her bat mitz- vah at Temple Shir Shalom. "I wrote my first song when I was 10 and sitting at the piano:' says Amanda, who uses her first and middle names for her entertainment projects, leaving off her surname, Shapiro. "The song just happened. When I write, there's nothing I can force." With the help of her voice coach and promotional work by her parents, MaryAnn and Morris Shapiro of Novi, Amanda began recording. She made her first EP, Land of an Endless Sea, in a New York studio when she was 15. Until then, music had been a hobby. "My next single, `Saturday in June, will probably be released in February:' says Amanda, who recorded in a Ferndale studio. "I wrote the song about a failed relationship last year. It was very exciting that Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers agreed to play guitar for the recording, adding his part at a studio in Hawaii. Technology has allowed musicians to connect without meeting each other." Amanda has decided to study busi- ness and economics at Arizona State University while keeping up with her musical interests. "I, didn't think a music degree would be practical:' says Amanda, who has enjoyed being in the Roeper choir and playing on the soccer team. "My big dream is to be a pop star; but however things go, I'll think of it as the way it's meant to be." ❑
