stelle Seltzer is 81 years
young. She was born July 5,
1930, at Women's Hospital in
Detroit weighing a mere 2.5 pounds.
Her tiny heart stopped beating seven
times.
That tiny heart has grown into a
big, beautiful heart. Estelle wears
a necklace every day with three
charms that say "Live, Love and
Laugh" ... and that is exactly how
she lives her life.
She's is a real people-person. "I
have a wonderful family and great
friends who mean the world to me:'
said Estelle, who has two sons, a
daughter in-law and two grandchil-
dren. "I lost my husband, Bob, my
soul mate, a couple months before
our 40th wedding anniversary."
Her two biggest passions are
writing poetry and doing stand-
up Yiddish comedy for seniors.
She has entertained at Trowbridge
Apartments in Southfield as well
as Hechtman Apartments and
Fleishman Residence, both located
in West Bloomfield.
"I start my day at 3 a.m. either
working on the computer, writing
poetry or watching TV," said Estelle,
who leads the morning minyan at
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield at
7:30 every Monday-Thursday. "I also
sing in the Temple choir.
"After minyan, I go to work for
my son, Michael, who owns SKM_
Marketing. I joke that I am his best
`call-girl' ... it even says that on
my business card. I make calls, do
charges and sell. Before I begin
working though, I always start the
day off with a joke to share with
everyone in the office."
Prior to working for her son for
the last 15 years, she's held numer-
ous jobs. "I have been in telemarket-
ing for almost 35 years:' said Estelle,
who also sold freezers, worked for
Reese Brothers Co. (whose focus
was helping children's organizations
as well as Mothers Against Drunk
Driving), and she also worked for a
holistic doctor doing stress-reduc-
tion seminars.
"One of my favorite jobs was

teaching disco classes at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. I taught from 1978-1983.
My girls and I actually appeared on
TV for The Vic Caputo Show once.
We had the best time ever. It was a
real hoot!"
Estelle has always loved writing
poetry and has written poetry as far
back as she can remember. She was
a member of a group called Writers
Corner that used to meet at the JCC
in Oak Park. "My junior high school
teacher was my mentor. She told me,
`Estelle, Don't ever stop writing:
"Sometimes, I accidentally double-
book myself because I am so busy:'
added Estelle, who is a member of
the travel group at the JCC in West
Bloomfield. "We travel to places
like Stratford and Toronto. We also
go to local plays at venues such as
Meadowbrook and the Fox Theatre. I
entertain people on the bus with my
jokes, and I always write a special
poem for each event that I give to
everyone to commemorate their trip."
Here are a few lines from one of
Estelle's hundreds of poems, all of
which have an upbeat message:
If you make a point of looking
on the sunny side
Whatever you have to do will
fall into place
And no matter what occurs in
your day-to-day living
Try to always keep a smile on
your face
"Life is too short so you have to
live in the now:' said Estelle. "I try
to make the most of every day. I just
want to make people happy."
